AltaGas - Engineer, Operations
Reporting to the Lead Engineer, Operations the Operations Engineer supports day-to-day operations providing hands-on technical expertise, driving risk-informed improvements, and executing MOCs and small capital projects in close collaboration with the field leadership team.
This role is intended to be located at AltaGas’ Calgary head office with regular and consistent field travel to the Ferndale Export Facility located in Washington State, USA.
You will:
- Provide day-to-day engineering support across assigned facilities. Assist with troubleshooting process, mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical issues while developing an understanding of facility systems, equipment, and operating practices. Escalate complex technical issues as appropriate.
- Support the development of Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) and plant modifications. Participate in the Management of Change (MOC) process by preparing technical documentation, coordinating required inputs, and ensuring assigned actions are completed in accordance with company standards
- Assist with plant performance monitoring, data analysis, technical documentation, and troubleshooting activities. Gather and interpret operational data to support informed decision making and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify opportunities to improve reliability, safety, and operational performance. Participate in evaluations and implementation of improvement initiatives.
- Support the identification and documentation of operational risks. Participate in risk assessments and help implement mitigation actions. Assist in incident investigations and follow-up activities.
- Support the execution of small projects by assisting with scope development, cost estimating, scheduling, vendor coordination, and progress tracking. Contribute to safe and effective project delivery under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Help ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Participate in audits, inspections, and safety meetings. Support documentation and training efforts.
- Actively seek opportunities to build technical knowledge and plant familiarity. Participate in structured learning programs, technical reviews, and mentorship sessions. Share learnings with peers and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
- Participate in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and incident reviews to develop an understanding of process and operational hazards and reinforce AltaGas' commitment to safety as a core value.
You have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Mechanical, Petroleum, or other relevant engineering disciplines will be considered with applicable experience.
- Minimum 5 years of oil and gas industry experience, preferably within a midstream environment; field operations experience is an asset.
- Professional designation in Alberta required: P.Eng., P.L. (Eng.), or P.Tech. (Eng.).
- Strong technical expertise in the design, operation, optimization, and troubleshooting of midstream facilities, with working knowledge of industry codes and standards (ASME, API, NACE).
- Proficient with Microsoft 365 and engineering tools, including HYSYS/ProMax, PI Vision/DataLink, and Maximo.
- Experience leading or participating in PHAs, HAZOPs, and other structured process safety and risk assessment activities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, solve complex operational challenges, and collaborate effectively with stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong commitment to safety, integrity, accountability, and regulatory compliance, with a proactive approach to continuous learning, operational improvement, and the adoption of new technologies and industry best practices.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to and work safely at operating facilities, including occasional work in elevated or confined-space environments.
