About this role

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) seeks a full-time Benefits Assistant to join its Administrative Department. This role is designed for a thoughtful, detail oriented early to mid-level professional looking for a meaningful opportunity in a proven  and vibrant organization that makes profound differences in the lives of people across our state.    

The Benefits Assistant is responsible for helping employees understand, enroll in and manage their workplace benefits. Candidates for this position should have some experience working in an office environment, providing administrative or client service support.  

This position will be supervised by the Director of People & Culture and will be based in Newark with a hybrid work schedule where we work in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

What You’ll Do:

  • Assist with enrollment during new hire onboarding and annual open enrollment, helping employees complete forms and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate benefits records by updating employee information, processing life event changes etc.
  • Coordinate with benefits providers to resolve issues related to coverage, claims, eligibility or enrollment.
  • Support compliance by helping to maintain documentation and following company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Answer employee questions about health insurance, dental and vision plans, disability coverage, Family Medical Leave and other benefits.
  • Educate employees by creating/distributing benefits guides, FAQs and maintaining up to date benefits information on the ACLU-NJ intranet
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need:

  • A brief, strong cover letter outlining your interest and applicable skills.
  • Ability to work well across diverse identities and experiences.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in implementation.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Basic Knowledge of Human Resources benefits.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HR Information Systems.
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
  • Alignment with the mission and values of ACLU-NJ.

Compensation 

The salary for this position is $61,000 annually, based on the ACLU-NJ salary bands. The ACLU-NJ supports and plans for staff member professional growth and skill development through internal and external opportunities. We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package which currently includes 30 days paid time off, 12 office holidays and 16 health care leave days; medical, vision, and dental insurance; 20 weeks (100 days) paid family leave; life and long-term disability insurance; pre-tax transit benefits; and a 401(k) plan with employer match. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
