SUMMARY

Summary:
Seeking a Senior Carpenter for the Facility Operations Division of the General Services Department. This position will be responsible for performing duties related to general building construction, preventative maintenance, and repairs in approximately 180 City facilities. This position will also be responsible for PM inspections and various building maintenance tasks such as, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tiles, repairing carpet and base, repairing doors, hanging displays, and other duties as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform building construction work including but not limited to cabinet making, metal stud framing, ceiling and acoustical tile installation, sheet rock repair/finishing, and door opening maintenance.
  • Obtain materials needs for assignments
  • Repair, replace, and maintain building door hardware as needed
  • Repair and install plastic laminate, toilet partitions, and toilet accessories
  • Keep records/timesheets and itemize duties performed on the job
  • Read building plans and diagrams
  • Calculate cost estimates as needed 
  • The person filling this position will be required to participate in an on-call rotation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
  • Must be able to work overtime, including weekend/holiday on-call and emergency call backs
  • Must have a good driving record, valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a city driving permit
  • Must work well as part of a team
  • Must be able to lift 75lbs. of equipment and/or tools
  • Ability to load and unload extension ladders from top of utility van and place upright against buildings
  • Ability to climb ladders, crawl and work in small spaces
  • Must work in an organized, clean and safe manner
  • Ability to use the Microsoft Suite and a computer-based work order management system

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School diploma plus six (6) years of experience with a mastery of skills in journey level construction work
  • Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and practices of the building construction trade
  • Experience working in local government and public safety facilities
  • Experience with commercial door hardware.  Locksmith background a plus

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma with one year of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of background, experience and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the position

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
