Description of Work

This is skilled work in preparing/cooking a major portion or all a meal in a commercial kitchen. This position is usually responsible for preparing an entrée, starch, or vegetable for Breakfast, Lunch, and/or Supper meal. Cooks are responsible for all consistency modifications required including thickening products, chopping, mincing and pureeing food and beverage items to medically prescribed consistencies, processing foods for meal substitutions; and preparing special medically prescribed dietary meals, etc.


ALL employees of Murdoch Center are designated as ESSENTIAL for adverse weather and emergency events.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $31,200.00 - $46,991.00

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Working knowledge of methods of preparation and cooking of food in quantity portions , proven ability to calculate amounts of food needed to supply the number of servings required

  • Proven knowledge with the standard tools, methods, and practices utilized to maintain food safety, knowledge of how to properly alter food and beverage consistencies

  • Proven experience with the uses and adaptabilities of various commercial kitchen equipment

  • Proven ability to interpret and follow standard and medically prescribed recipes and proven ability to perform simple math calculations and understand/follow oral and written instructions.

  • Valid Driver's License

Work Schedule: 5:00am - 2:00pm/4:am - 12:00pm

Murdoch Developmental Center is a 24/7 state residential facility located in Butner, NC, near the Research Triangle area.  Murdoch serves individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD).  Murdoch is a caring community where professionals work with people of various ages, cognitive and functional abilities. Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
