DSP Intern – Internship Job Description & Expectations

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Intern, you will gain supervised, hands-on experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities while developing the skills needed for a career in human services. Interns will work under the guidance and supervision of a trained DSP and agency supervisor. The internship provides an opportunity to learn person-centered support, build professional skills and contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.

DSP Intern Responsibilities

DSP Interns will:
● Support individuals in expressing personal choices, building independence and achieving personal goals.
● Advocate for, encourage and guide individuals while promoting dignity, respect and self-determination.
● Support community integration and participation in recreational, social, educational and daily activities.
● Assist individuals with daily living skills and activities as directed by the supervising DSP, including personal care, dining, dressing, meal preparation and other approved supports.
● Encourage individuals to develop and strengthen independent living skills.
● Provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment for individuals receiving services.
● Work collaboratively with DSP staff and the agency team to follow individualized support plans and complete required documentation.
● Observe, communicate and report relevant information, concerns or changes to the supervising DSP or agency supervisor.
● Complete assigned tasks and responsibilities while actively participating in learning opportunities.
● Maintain confidentiality and follow all agency policies, procedures and safety guidelines.

Internship Expectations

DSP Interns are expected to:
● Attend all scheduled internship hours and arrive on time.
● Follow agency procedures for reporting absences, lateness or schedule changes and notify both the site supervisor and CRED Program staff as soon as possible.
● Treat individuals, supervisors, coworkers, program staff and community members with respect and professionalism.
● Follow workplace rules, safety procedures and program expectations at all times.
● Remain engaged during scheduled hours and use internship time to learn and develop professional skills.
● Submit accurate timesheets and required documentation on time.
● Complete any required onboarding information, including information needed for background checks.
● Maintain professional boundaries and handle all confidential information according to agency policies.

DSP Interns are not expected to work independently. All responsibilities and supports will be provided under the supervision and guidance of trained DSP staff and agency leadership.
