Role Overview:
We are looking for a highly analytical and detail-oriented Electronics Costing Engineer to drive cost reduction and cost optimization initiatives across Electrical & Electronics (E&E) components used in our EV products. The candidate will be responsible for developing should-cost models, benchmarking supplier quotations, identifying cost reduction opportunities, evaluating alternate components and suppliers, and working closely with engineering, supply chain, EMS partners, and suppliers to achieve competitive component costs.
The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of electronic components, PCBAs, semiconductor pricing, manufacturing processes, BOM structures, and electronics cost drivers, with the ability to translate technical specifications and manufacturing requirements into detailed cost estimates.
What You’ll Do:
Electronics Costing & Should-Cost Analysis
- Develop detailed should-cost models for electronic components, PCBAs, assemblies, and sub-assemblies based on BOM, specifications, manufacturing processes, and volumes.
- Analyze supplier quotations and identify cost drivers across material, PCB, assembly, semiconductor, testing, tooling, overhead, logistics, and margin.
- Benchmark component and PCBA costs against market prices, alternate suppliers, historical costs, and comparable products.
- Validate supplier cost breakups and challenge cost assumptions to ensure commercially competitive pricing.
- Build and maintain cost databases for electronic components, including ICs, semiconductors, passives, connectors, PCBs, sensors, and other E&E parts.
- Perform cost analysis for different volume scenarios, MOQ, annual demand, and production ramp-up.
Cost Reduction & VA/VE
- Identify and drive cost reduction opportunities across E&E components through design optimization, component selection, localization, supplier development, and process improvements.
- Work with engineering teams to identify cost-effective alternatives and P2P (pin-to-pin) replacement opportunities without compromising performance, quality, reliability, or functionality.
- Identify opportunities for component commonization, BOM optimization, specification optimization, and part consolidation.
- Evaluate alternate manufacturers and suppliers for cost-competitive sourcing.
- Drive Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VA/VE) initiatives for electronic components and PCBAs.
- Analyze opportunities for localization of imported components and quantify the potential cost benefits.
- Support cost-down targets for existing products as well as new product development programs.
Supplier & EMS Cost Validation
- Work closely with Supply Chain, EMS partners, and suppliers to validate component and PCBA pricing.
- Analyze and negotiate supplier cost breakups based on BOM, conversion cost, yield, cycle time, test cost, tooling, overhead, and margin.
- Compare costing from multiple EMS partners and identify cost competitiveness gaps.
- Conduct supplier cost audits and validate quoted prices against market benchmarks where required.
- Challenge price increases and identify opportunities to mitigate cost escalations.
- Support commercial negotiations with data-driven cost analysis and should-cost benchmarks.
Component & Market Benchmarking
- Track market prices and cost trends for semiconductors, ICs, MOSFETs, IGBTs, MCUs, memory, connectors, passives, sensors, and other electronic components.
- Study alternate manufacturers and technologies to identify cost-effective replacement opportunities.
- Conduct teardown and benchmarking analysis of competing products where required.
- Monitor semiconductor lifecycle, availability, allocation, and market trends that may impact component pricing.
- Develop and maintain a database of component prices, supplier quotes, historical pricing, and alternate sources.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Engineering, R&D, Supply Chain, Quality, Manufacturing, and Program teams to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities.
- Review BOMs and engineering changes from a cost perspective and highlight cost impact before implementation.
- Participate in design reviews and provide inputs on component selection, manufacturability, localization, and cost optimization.
- Evaluate the cost impact of ECNs, design changes, alternate components, and specification changes.
- Support new product development teams with target costing and cost optimization from the early design stage.
Cost Tracking & Reporting
- Establish and track component-level and system-level cost reduction targets.
- Maintain cost trackers for BOM cost, supplier pricing, should-cost, savings pipeline, and realized savings.
- Prepare cost comparison reports, supplier benchmarking reports, and management dashboards using MS Excel/Google Sheets.
- Track savings from VA/VE, localization, alternate sourcing, design changes, and supplier negotiations.
- Prepare periodic reports highlighting identified savings, implemented savings, pending opportunities, and risks.
- Maintain accurate documentation of costing assumptions, quotations, benchmarks, and cost reduction activities.
Who Can Apply?
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in electronics costing, procurement, sourcing, component engineering, cost reduction, or electronics manufacturing within the automotive, EV, EMS, or electronics industry.
- Strong understanding of electronic components, PCBAs, BOM structures, and electronics manufacturing processes.
- Good understanding of semiconductor, PCB, PCBA, connector, passive, sensor, and electromechanical component cost drivers.
- Experience in should-costing, supplier quotation analysis, cost benchmarking, and commercial negotiations.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes such as SMT, THT, PCB fabrication, injection molding, die casting, machining, and assembly is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in MS Excel/Google Sheets.
- Good communication and cross-functional coordination skills.
Good To Haves:
- Experience in EV, automotive electronics, EMS, or Tier-1/Tier-2 automotive suppliers.
- Experience in VA/VE, target costing, teardown benchmarking, and cost engineering.
- Hands-on experience in identifying P2P/component alternatives and cost-competitive manufacturers.
- Knowledge of semiconductor and electronic component pricing and market dynamics.
- Experience with BOM costing and cost roll-up of PCBAs and electronic assemblies.
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and procurement workflows.
- Understanding of component localization and import substitution opportunities.
- Exposure to PCB/PCBA manufacturing, testing, tooling, and yield-related cost drivers.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with a focus on cost reduction and value creation.
