Job Description:

The Histology Technician position is responsible for order entry and preparation of specimens for the gross and microscopic exam by the Pathologist and specialized testing/procedures on tissue.

Essential Functions 1. Demonstrates safe and competent use of equipment and software to carry out duties. Includes; accurate entry of patient information, billing type and specimen information into software systems such as CoPath, Sunquest and Eclipses. 2. Prioritize workflow by medical necessity and priority. Answers and responds to telephone inquiries including faxing reports as requested. 3. Operates equipment including slide stainer, fume hood, microtome, tissue processor, and cryostat. 4. Prepares specimens for gross examination and orientation and grossing of dermatology specimens. 5. Performs cutting including frozen sections as needed and special stains as requested. 6. Performs cover slipping and staining of slides. 7. Prepares bone marrow kits. Assists with bone marrow collections and assist with autopsies and special procedures as requested. 8. Prepares specimens for send outs, including stone analysis, bone marrow studies and lymphoma studies. 9. Files slides and blocks, Cleans Gross Exam Room, cleans glassware, discards tissues, and maintains and stocks supplies. 10. Maintains Quality control and Quality Assurance logs and assists with QA studies and assists in writing and documenting new procedures and implementing new instrumentation. Reviews procedures as requested.
