Job Role: HVAC Design & Estimating Engineer
Compensation range: $2,000 AUD - $3,000 AUD / Monthly
Engagement type: Independent Contractor Agreement
Work Schedule: This role is expected to align with the AU business hours (approx. 9 AM - 5 PM, Monday to Friday) for collaboration, but as a contractor, you’ll have flexibility in how you manage your time.
Who We Are: At Hunt St, we help Australian companies hire top remote talent in the Philippines. For this role, you will be engaged directly by the client as an independent contractor. We are not an outsourcing agency. All of our roles are 100% remote so you'll be able to work from home.
Who The Client Is: A commercial HVAC contractor based in Sydney, NSW. We design, supply, install, and maintain mechanical services for commercial and industrial clients across the greater Sydney metro area. We operate across new construction, major plant upgrades, and ongoing service and maintenance contracts.
As we grow, we are building a remote support team in the Philippines to assist our local technicians and project staff with estimating, technical, and administrative functions.
Role Overview: This role will provide design, estimating, tendering, and heat load calculation support for commercial HVAC projects. You will work directly with the business manager to prepare accurate quantity take-offs, bills of quantities, tender submissions, and mechanical load calculations.
This role will begin on a full-time basis. You must be comfortable working independently to tight deadlines, with a strong attention to detail and a solid understanding of Australian HVAC systems and commercial construction.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Compliance
- Assist with design work for HVAC installation projects in line with client and project requirements
- Ensure all design and estimating work complies with relevant Australian standards, codes, and legislation (including the NCC, AS 1668, AS 3666, and AS/NZS 3000)
- Keep up to date with changes to relevant Australian building codes and standards affecting HVAC design
Estimating & Quantity Take-offs
- Measure and quantify materials and labour from PDF and CAD drawings
- Produce accurate linear metre, m2, and item count take-offs for ductwork, pipework, equipment, and accessories
- Prepare Bills of Quantities (BOQs) from drawings and project specifications
- Maintain and update Excel-based take-off templates and estimating spreadsheets
Tender Preparation
- Compile and format complete tender packages including scope breakdowns, pricing schedules, and compliance documentation
- Review tender documents and RFQs to identify scope, inclusions, exclusions, and conditions
- Send Requests for Quotation (RFQs) to subcontractors and suppliers
- Follow up and consolidate subcontractor pricing into the overall estimate
- Assist with preparation of cover letters and tender submission documents
Variation Tracking
- Log all variations raised during a project against the original scope of works
- Maintain a variation register and assist in preparing variation claims for client submission
- Track approval status of variations and flag outstanding items to the project team
Heat Load Calculations and duct sizing
- Perform HVAC heat load calculations for commercial spaces using industry-standard software
- Prepare room-by-room and system-level load summaries for design review
- Assist with equipment selection based on calculated loads and required minimum flow rates
- Ensure calculations align with relevant Australian standards including AS 1668 and NCC Volume 1
General Support
- Assist with data entry and job setup in SimPro
- Maintain accurate project files and documentation in OneDrive
- Support quote follow-ups and client communication as directed
Requirements
- Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years' experience in HVAC design, estimating, quantity surveying, or a similar role
- Proficient in Bluebeam Revu, CostX, Buildsoft, or similar estimating software
- Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and project specifications
- Experience performing heat load calculations using HAP, Trace 700, or equivalent software
- Solid Microsoft Excel skills — able to build and maintain estimating templates
- Familiarity with Australian construction standards and HVAC specifications is highly regarded
- Strong written and spoken English
- Reliable internet connection, suitable home office setup, and own computer
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with Australian HVAC contractors or engineering consultancies
- Knowledge of AS 1668, AS/NZS 3666, and NCC Volume 1 (Section J)
- Familiarity with SimPro job management software
- AutoCAD or Revit skills
- Experience preparing O&M manuals or project handover documentation
