Position Purpose:
Manage and oversee the daily operations of the Academic Writing Assistance Centre (CARTU) and coordinate the services and activities offered to students related to academic writing.
Ensure the ongoing development of mentors by designing and implementing training programs, organizing workshops, and monitoring mentors' progress and performance.
Collaborate with faculties and administrative units to develop relevant training content tailored to the needs of mentors across the University, with the goal of maintaining a community of best practices in mentoring.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
- Oversee the daily operations of the Centre, including scheduling writing mentors, coordinating student appointments, and managing the physical and technological resources required for service delivery.
- Recruit, select, and train writing mentors to provide academic writing support to students. Organize ongoing training sessions to enhance mentors’ writing, coaching, and peer-support skills.
- Provide one-on-one writing support sessions to undergraduate and graduate students across various academic disciplines. Assist students in developing their academic writing skills, organizing and structuring their assignments, and improving their writing style and clarity.
- Design and implement a range of services for the student community that address needs identified by faculties and administrative units. These services may take various forms, including writing workshops, writing cafés, anti-procrastination events, and other academic support initiatives.
- Collaborate with faculties and administrative units to develop and coordinate activities and services for undergraduate and graduate students related to academic writing, such as writing cafés, anti-procrastination initiatives, and other writing support programs.
- Develop and maintain a repository of academic writing resources, including style guides, sample papers, citation and referencing tools, and text-review software. Provide guidance and support to writing mentors in the effective use of these resources.
- Work closely with the Student Affairs Communications Officer to promote CARTU programs, services, and activities and to ensure effective communication with the student community.
What You Will Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of five (5) years of customer service experience, OR a master’s degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum of two (2) years of customer service experience (master’s degree preferred).
- Bilingualism: French and English (spoken and written), to be considered for this position, candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.
- Experience in tutoring, mentoring, or formal teaching.
- Excellent academic writing and verbal communication skills in both French and English.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Demonstrated flexibility in work schedule, with occasional evening and weekend work required.
