The Opportunity

Cochlear has an opportunity for a permanent, full-time Legal Counsel based in our Macquarie University, Sydney office. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel - R&D, IP & Global Strategic Marketing, this role offers an exceptional opportunity for a driven lawyer to work closely with senior stakeholders across Global Strategic Marketing, R&D and other business functions and take ownership of a diverse portfolio of legal matters including advertising and marketing review, commercial contracting, intellectual property and disputes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with stakeholders to provide practical legal advice that enables business objectives while managing risk.
  • Review and advise on advertising, promotional materials, marketing claims and consumer law matters.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including services, consultancy, sponsorship and research agreements.
  • Support disputes and litigation matters relating to marketing claims, intellectual property, and product liability.
  • Develop and maintain legal templates, precedents and knowledge-sharing resources.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including leveraging technology and AI-enabled solutions within the Legal Function.

About You

As we continue to innovate and grow, we're looking for a lawyer who combines strong technical expertise with commercial judgement and a collaborative approach. The role is ideally suited to a commercially minded lawyer who is looking to broaden their experience in strategic commercial and marketing matters, deepen their business partnering capability and grow into a more senior in-house legal role.

Essential:

  • Qualified to practise law in Australia with 6-8 years PQE.
  • Strong experience in Australian competition and consumer law, including marketing review and advertising matters.
  • Demonstrated commercial contracting experience, including drafting and negotiating complex agreements.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and business partnering skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound legal judgment in a complex and regulated environment.

Ideal:

  • In-house legal experience within MedTech, healthcare, pharmaceutical or other regulated industries.
  • Experience supporting disputes, litigation or product liability matters.,
  • Therapeutic goods advertising code and intellectual property law experience.
  • Experience improving legal processes, templates and knowledge management practices.
  • Interest in leveraging AI and technology to improve legal service delivery.
