Department Overview:

The Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI) provides groundbreaking cultural programming for the UW-Madison and broader communities.

Anticipated Start Date:

September 7, 2026

Minimum: 8 

Schedule:

Typical shifts are 2-4hrs. Event day(s) can be 8hrs.

All Interns MUST be available to work the following dates/events:

FALL 2026
Sept 3 - September All Cohort Meeting [Tentative upon Hiring Date]
Oct 2 – October All Cohort Meeting
Oct 16–17 – Passing the Mic 2026
Nov 6 - November All Cohort Meeting
Nov - Thanksgiving Break Weeks OFF
Dec 4 - December All Cohort Meeting (Senior Celebration)
Dec 10 - Last Week OFF

SPRING 2027
Jan 23 – Level Up Conference
Feb 20–21 – First Wave Retreat
Mar 5 – March All Cohort Meeting
Mar - SPRING BREAK WEEK OFF
Apr 3–4 – April All Co, Just Bust! Open Mic + Workshop
Apr 8 - 20th Anniversary Gala
Apr 9 - 10 - Line Breaks Festival Showcases
Apr 15 - 16 - Line Breaks Festival Concert and IACS
May 7 – May All Cohort (Senior Celebration)
May 10 - EXAM WEEK OFF
June 11 - Internship Ends

Additional dates may be needed. Positions can work until June 21.

Qualifications:

Required:
Must be University of Wisconsin - Madison Student (enrolled during time of employment)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Effective organizational and time management skills
Ability to collaborate with OMAI community to support OMAI’s Missions, Values, Goals, and Initiatives.
Commitment to the values of equity and responsible community engagement
Ability to adapt to change

Preferred:
Strong History and Interest in Hip Hop and Urban Arts preferred but not required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

An ideal Communications Intern candidate has:
Creative Arts Experience (Graphic Design required)
Design Software Experience (Canva required, Adobe Creative Suite preferred)
Social Media Management Experience (X/Twitter and Wordpress preferred)
Copy/Article Writing Experience (required)
Hip Hop and Urban Arts Journalism [ie Music Review, Art Critiques, Film Reviews, etc] (preferred but not required)
Strong History and Interest in Hip Hop and Urban Arts (preferred but not required)

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Communications Intern:
- Content Calendars: Develop and execute content calendars for X/Twitter and the OMAI Website
- X/Twitter Management: Tweet/Post 2-4 times a week. Write engaging captions. Interact with digital audience via comments and likes. Answer DMs. Report analytics.
- Website Management: Post 2-4 articles (1-2 pages) a month with an OMAI aligned topic. Write engaging articles. Engage with the OMAI community, events, and initiatives for topics of interest. Interview University community members. Create Surveys.
- Creative Deliverables: Create engaging graphics that pair with articles and posts. All creative assets must align with the OMAI/UW Brand. Develop and Execute Quarterly Newsletter.
- Software Use: Utilize Asana, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Outlook to collaborate with the OMAI Team.
Professional Development: 2 Software Trainings; 1 Career Advising Session; 1 Technical Training Workshop

Physical Demands:

Must be able to stand for 2-4 hours at a time.
