About this role

The Ophthalmologist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system. This includes outpatient consultations, medical and surgical management, and performing eye procedures and operations where credentialed. The role requires evidence-based practice, strong clinical judgment, and adherence to patient safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

1) Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis

Conduct comprehensive eye examinations (vision, refraction, intraocular pressure, slit lamp, fundoscopy).
Diagnose common and complex ophthalmic conditions such as:
Cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration
Dry eye disease, uveitis, keratitis, corneal ulcers
Refractive errors, strabismus, amblyopia
Eye trauma and infections

2) Treatment & Management

Prescribe appropriate medical treatments (topical/systemic medications, injections where applicable).
Perform minor procedures:
Foreign body removal
Chalazion incision and curettage

Manage chronic and systemic conditions affecting the eye (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disease).

3) Surgical Responsibilities - Not Applicable

4) Patient Education & Counseling

Explain diagnoses, treatment plans, risks, and alternatives clearly.
Support shared decision-making and patient compliance.

5) Collaboration & Referral

Coordinate care with Optometrists, Internists, Endocrinologists, Neurologists, and Emergency teams.
Refer complex cases appropriately (retina, cornea, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology).
Participate in multi-disciplinary case discussions when needed.

6) Quality, Safety & Compliance

Maintain accurate and timely medical records in EMR.
Follow infection control practices and surgical safety protocols.
Comply with licensing rules, hospital/clinic policies, and accreditation standards.
Report adverse events and participate in audit and quality improvement.
