Principal Geotechnical Engineer – Rock Mechanics

About this role

Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer (Rock Mechanics) to join our established Mining Advisory team, delivering high-profile projects across the global mining sector.

You'll lead the delivery of technically complex geotechnical and rock engineering projects, supporting clients through all stages of the mining lifecycle. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, you'll combine technical excellence with strong project and client leadership. The role includes:

  • Technical leadership in geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics projects
  • Rock mass characterisation, slope stability and underground excavation design assessments
  • Development and implementation of Ground Control Management Plans (GCMPs)
  • Client relationship management and proposal support
  • Mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers and geologists
  • Technical reporting, due diligence reviews and study management
  • Desk-based work alongside domestic and international site visits

You'll collaborate with colleagues across Mining Advisory, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Planning, Engineering and Global Advisory, supporting complex projects and delivering sustainable solutions for mining clients around the world.

About You

  • Extensive experience delivering geotechnical and rock mechanics projects within the mining sector
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Geologist (CGeol), or working towards chartership
  • Degree qualified in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology, or a related discipline
  • Strong background in rock mass characterisation, ground control management, slope stability and/or underground geotechnical engineering
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary projects, budgets and project teams
  • Knowledge of geotechnical assessment methodologies, including empirical, analytical and numerical approaches
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software such as Rocscience and/or Itasca packages, with a strong understanding of modelling inputs and outputs
  • Experience preparing technical reports, due diligence reviews and mining studies, including support for standards such as SK-1300, NI 43-101 and JORC
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and client-facing skills
  • A passion for mentoring and developing junior colleagues
  • Willingness to undertake occasional international travel to project sites
