Description -

What an R&D Engineer – Mechatronic Systems & AI Design Does at HP:

  • Supports the design and optimization of motion control systems, including motors, transmission drives, actuators, and related mechanisms.
  • Analyzes system accuracy, motion behavior, stability, and performance using engineering fundamentals, test data, and analytical tools.
  • Designs and evaluates engineering solutions for mechatronic systems, mechanical hardware, thermal hardware, and electronics enclosures based on established engineering principles and development guidelines.
  • Supports feasibility studies, design-margin analysis, validation planning, and empirical testing for new and modified designs.
  • Develops and executes test plans for form, fit, function, shock and vibration, reliability, acoustics, system power, thermal performance, and motion-control behavior.
  • Applies data analysis and AI-assisted methods to improve system understanding, performance tuning, predictive insights, and engineering decision-making.
  • Supports prototype builds, test setup, hardware debugging, design validation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Collaborates with internal teams and external development partners to track design status, resolve technical issues, and support project execution.
  • Participates in cross-functional product development activities with mechanical, electrical, firmware, system engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams.
  • Communicates engineering findings, test results, design trade-offs, and recommendations clearly to project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Mechatronic System Design

  • Support the development of mechatronic systems involving mechanical structures, actuators, sensors, motors, transmission mechanisms, and control interfaces.
  • Assist in evaluating design concepts, system architecture options, and product performance trade-offs.
  • Apply engineering fundamentals to support product robustness, reliability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.

2. Motion Control & System Performance

  • Support motion-control tuning and validation for servo, motor, and mechanism-driven systems.
  • Analyze motion accuracy, response time, repeatability, stability, and system behavior.
  • Use tools such as MATLAB, Python, or C/C++ to analyze test data and support control-system development.

3. Validation & Engineering Characterization

  • Support engineering characterization plans for mechanical, thermal, electrical, acoustic, and motion-related performance.
  • Conduct hands-on testing on prototypes, fixtures, and product-level systems.
  • Document test results, identify risks, and support corrective-action activities.

4. AI-Assisted Engineering & Data Analysis

  • Explore and apply AI or data-driven approaches to support performance analysis, predictive modeling, trend detection, and design optimization.
  • Use data analysis to generate insights from test results, system behavior, and field-related observations.
  • Support automation of analysis workflows where appropriate.

5. Cross-Functional Execution

  • Work with mechanical, electrical, firmware, simulation, and product teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and engineering checkpoints.
  • Support project deliverables under the guidance of senior engineers and technical leads.

Individuals Who Do Well in This Role Usually Possess:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Control Systems, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong fundamentals in kinematics, dynamics, mechanics, and motion-control systems.
  • Basic understanding of servo control, mechatronics, feedback systems, or system dynamics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Hands-on mindset with willingness to work on hardware, prototypes, test setups, and debugging.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Internship, academic project, capstone project, or early work experience related to mechatronics, robotics, control systems, automation, or product development.
  • Practical programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or similar languages.
  • Familiarity with ProEngineer, Creo, SolidWorks, or other 3D CAD tools.
  • Exposure to designing or analyzing motors, transmission drives, actuators, sheet metal parts, plastic parts, or production tooling.
  • Interest or exposure to AI/machine learning concepts applied to engineering, such as predictive modeling, data analysis, optimization, or automation.
  • Basic understanding of product validation areas such as shock and vibration, reliability, acoustics, system power, thermal behavior, or EMI.
