About this role

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Data Center Decommissioning Technician to join our Infrastructure Operations team. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and secure decommissioning, migration, and end-of-life processing of server racks that power the world's most comprehensive cloud platform. You will work hands-on with industry-leading data center infrastructure, ensuring the protection of customer data while supporting AWS capacity planning and operational excellence.

As a Decommissioning Technician, you will execute complex workflows involving network isolation, power management, media destruction, and physical rack relocation. This role requires strong attention to detail, technical aptitude, and a commitment to safety in a fast-paced data center environment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including Network Engineering, Facilities Operations, and Security to deliver seamless infrastructure lifecycle management.

Key job responsibilities
Execute end-to-end server rack decommissioning workflows using AWS proprietary tools and platforms, including Intact Rack Migration (IRM), Media Destruction Rack Migration (MDRM).

Perform network device isolation and verification using automated workflow tools, ensuring zero customer impact through proper device state validation and alarm suppression

Coordinate with Data Center Engineering Operations teams to safely de-energize racks, disconnect power systems, and handle battery backup units following established safety protocols

Remove, inventory, and securely transport data storage media (hard drives, solid-state drives, and other storage devices) to destruction facilities, maintaining strict chain of custody documentation

Apply two-person verification procedures for all critical tasks involving rack identification, media handling, and power management to ensure operational safety and data security

Prepare racks for physical relocation by applying security seals, tamper detection devices, and protective wrapping for intact migrations between data center facilities

Coordinate with Data Center Security personnel for secure area exits and vendor escort procedures, ensuring compliance with all security protocols

Load and secure racks for transportation, complete shipping documentation, and track assets through the entire decommissioning lifecycle

Maintain accurate documentation of all work activities in tracking systems, including timestamps, asset scans, media counts, and completion verification

Adhere to all safety standards including proper use of personal protective equipment, safe lifting techniques, electrical safety procedures, and hazard reporting

Troubleshoot workflow blockers and escalate issues appropriately to program managers, engineering teams, or site leadership

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize decommissioning processes, reduce cycle times, and enhance operational efficiency

Support emergency response procedures including participation in quarterly safety drills and incident response protocols

A day in the life
You will work on decommission of data center infrastructure including racks, servers, and networking equipment following established SOPs as per workflow and ticket-based environment. Perform hardware operations such as rack installation, migration and systematic problem resolution. Maintain site organisation and cleanliness while demonstrating strong troubleshooting abilities. Physical requirements include lifting and racking equipment up to 20kg, potentially working in confined spaces or elevated locations. Basic Qualifications

- 2+ years of Computer Hardware Repair, Infrastructure Cabling, Network Deployment, Data Center Operations, or Technical Project Management experience
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

- Can work in cramped spaces or in elevated locations while adhering to health & safety guidelines
- Experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure
- Experience managing work and priorities through a ticketing system
- Experience with cabling infrastructure best practices and methodologies
- Experience working in a data center environment (racking and stacking gear, cable management, hot/cold aisle containment)
