About this role

About the Team: 

The SCMP racing desk covers all things racing, at home and abroad. If it's happening on or off the track our team is expected to know about it. Like those we report on, the team is full of specialists, with experience built up from working across the world.

Purpose of the Position:

We are looking for a reporter who can add to the depth of knowledge and skills on the desk, who is just as happy with track work as race reporting and features, can turn their hands to a multitude of tasks and can do it quickly.

In this role, you will: 

  • Deliver comprehensive coverage of Hong Kong horse racing across both print and online mediums, from race previews and reviews to feature stories and videos
  • Generate original content for SCMP's digital and print editions
  • Use contacts to bring in exclusive stories and break news on a regular basis
  • Attract readers to online stories using variety of tools and visual elements
  • Get to the heart of a story quickly and clearly, highlighting the stakes for a global audience
  • Ensure all stories have accurate and eye-catching visual elements, content is distributed and consumed on different devices and platforms (mobile, social media, news aggregators)
  • Produce multimedia packages and drive social media engagement


Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • A passion for horse racing and a willingness to learn about everything required in the day-to-day production of a newspaper
  • Strong writing skills, with experience in a real-time online news operation, wire service or a newspaper an advantage
  • Ability to utilise social media channels to boost stories online
  • Awareness of media law and legal dangers, and of social media as a news dissemination tool
  • Solid news judgment and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
