About this role

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a Research Centre at Nanyang Technological University Singapore that conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. EOS maintains a regional network of geophysical observation stations in collaboration with neighboring countries in Southeast Asia, that are supported by the EOS Centre for Geohazard Observations, as well as a Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.

EOS seeks a Research Associate to work on understanding earthquake hazard and rapid and accurate quantification of disasters using remote sensing and space geodesy. The candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Prof Sang-Ho Yun and will collaborate with the researchers from the ‘Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia’ project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The Research Associate will work on understanding earthquake hazard through fault geometry and rheology and rapid and accurate quantification of disasters using remote sensing and space geodesy. They will also advance InSAR processing algorithms to optimise deformation mapping and change detection capability in Southeast Asia, where SAR analysis is complicated by tropospheric and ionospheric effects, dense vegetation, and soil moisture.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct research on fault geometry and rheology that drives the future earthquake hazards

  • Rapid generation of disaster maps (damage proxy) for earthquakes and volcanic activities

  • Engage machine learning techniques to improve the InSAR deformation and coherence time series analysis

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and stakeholders to translate research outcomes into operational applications.

  • The successful candidate will be encouraged to publish 1 peer-reviewed technical papers per year.

Requirements:

  • Master degree in Geophysics, Geomatics, Geodesy, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Hazards, or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated expertise in remote sensing, image processing, inverse problems, and machine learning.

  • Proven experience in the analysis and interpretation of a wide range of geospatial and geodetic datasets.

  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C, and Fortran.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, as English is the primary working language used to communicate and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, industry partners, funding agencies, and academic collaborators.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, list of publications, and statement of research interests. Applications will be reviewed immediately.

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
