Job Description

Basic Purpose 

Under general direction, the Interpretive Programs Coordinator plans, develops, and coordinates interpretive programs and activities within Oklahoma State Parks and other tourism destinations. This role leads and supports staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers while developing engaging educational programs that highlight Oklahoma’s historical, natural, cultural, and scientific resources. The Coordinator provides training, guidance, and oversight to ensure high-quality visitor experiences and successful program delivery. 

 

Typical Job Duties 

• Oversee the development, promotion, and implementation of a diversified interpretative program for all ages in accordance with guest needs; evaluate program effectiveness; recommend changes and implement management decisions. 

• Responsible for educating the public about the state park environments and maintaining the natural environment on land specifically dedicated to wilderness populations.   

• Responsible for preserving, restoring, maintaining, and protecting the natural habitat.  

• Responsible for training Naturalists, Interpretative Guides, Park Managers and other park staff on the interpretive facts of each state park. 

• Oversee the activities of interpretative program staff and volunteers; provide input to relevant supervisor for employee performance evaluations. 

• Responsible for licenses and permits for the nature centers.  

• Responsible for taking guests on nature walks and doing research for educational work.  

• Serve as representative of interpretative program to external organizations; attend and/or speak at meetings, community and professional functions, and conferences as assigned. 

• Assist Director of State Parks, Resorts and Golf with budget development and management. 

• Prepare reports, monitor expenditures, and maintain department records. 

• Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and staff training for program areas. 

• Receive and respond to questions and concerns from guests; identify issues and resolve problems or refer to other managers as appropriate. 

• Monitor inventory, order supplies, and maintain purchase records within authorized budget. 

• Work collaboratively with internal and external customers. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Forestry, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, Anthropology or a related field; AND three (3) years  of experience directing and overseeing an interpretative program, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one (1) year of experience in environmental education or ecology or closely related work for each year of the required education. 

• Physical requirements will include the ability to lead walking tours and navigate trails, regular bending, stooping, and carrying items up to 50 lbs.  

• Ability to work in various weather conditions. 

Special Requirements 

• Scheduled hours will require flexibility, including holidays, weekends, or events, based on the needs of the agency.  

• Some locations will require a valid Driver’s License.
