Senior Engineer – Chiller Performance Testing

About this role

Qualification 

  • B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering 

  • Minimum 5–6 years of relevant experience in HVAC, refrigeration, chiller testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance validation 

  • Knowledge of: 

  • Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers 

  • AHRI Standards 

  • NABL Accreditation Requirements 

  • BEE Star Label Program 

  • HVAC Controls and Instrumentation 

  • Test Bed Operations and Calibration Management

Key Responsibilities – Sr. Testing Engineer / Assistant Manager – Testing 

The role primarily focuses on chiller performance testing, troubleshooting, test facility management, and AHRI/NABL/BEE compliance. 

1. Chiller Performance Testing 

  • Conduct performance testing of Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers as per production plans and priorities. 

  • Verify critical performance parameters, including: 

  • Cooling Capacity (TR or kW) 

  • Power Consumption (kW) 

  • Input Power (kW) 

  • KW/TR or COP 

  • Analyze and validate test results. 

  • Ensure compliance with: 

  • AHRI 551/591 Standards 

  • AHRI 550/590 Standards 

  • IS 16590 Standards 

  • Prepare and maintain performance test records and reports. 

2. Customer & Third-Party Testing 

  • Independently handle customer witness tests and third-party inspections. 

  • Coordinate testing activities with customers and inspection agencies. 

  • Prepare and maintain: 

  • Log Sheets 

  • Test Reports 

  • Minutes of Meeting (MOM) 

  • Ensure timely closure of observations and customer requirements. 

3. Troubleshooting & Technical Support 

  • Diagnoses and resolve: 

  • Electrical issues 

  • Mechanical issues 

  • Refrigeration system issues 

  • Instrumentation-related issues 

  • Troubleshoot all types of chillers, including: 

  • Screw Chillers 

  • Scroll Chillers 

  • Centrifugal Chillers 

  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for failures. 

  • Support compressor overhaul, repair, and fault diagnosis activities. 

  • Provide technical guidance during testing and commissioning. 

4. Test Bed & Equipment Maintenance 

  • Maintain and troubleshoot chiller test beds and support infrastructure. 

  • Conduct: 

  • Leak testing 

  • Refrigerant charging 

  • System repair activities 

  • Preventive maintenance 

  • Monitor: 

  • Refrigerant pressures 

  • Water temperatures 

  • System operating conditions 

  • Ensure reliable operation of test facilities and equipment. 

5. HVAC & Controls Expertise 

  • Work on: 

  • HVAC systems 

  • Electrical systems 

  • DDC (Direct Digital Controls) 

  • Carry out: 

  • Installation activities 

  • System modifications 

  • Commissioning activities 

  • Ensure compliance with OEM specifications and safety requirements. 

6. Calibration & Certification Management 

  • Monitor the calibration status of all testing instruments. 

  • Maintain calibration of records and reports. 

  • Coordinate calibration activities with approved laboratories. 

  • Ensure compliance with: 

  • AHRI certification requirements 

  • NABL accreditation requirements 

  • Verify measurement accuracy and instrument traceability. 

7. AHRI/NABL Coordination 

  • Coordinate documentation required for: 

  • AHRI certification 

  • NABL accreditation 

  • Arrange: 

  • Witness performance tests 

  • Virtual performance tests 

  • Support AHRI/NABL audits and assessments. 

  • Coordinate with certification agencies and internal stakeholders. 

  • Ensure continuous compliance with the test facility. 

8. BEE Star Label Coordination 

  • Coordinate documentation required for the BEE Star Labeling Program. 

  • Prepare and maintain: 

  • Technical documentation 

  • Performance reports 

  • Compliance records 

  • Liaise with consultants and certification agencies. 

  • Support: 

  • Product registration activities 

  • BEE audits & Assessment requirements 

  • Ensure compliance with current BEE regulations and guidelines. 

9. New Product & Test Facility Development 

  • Participate in: 

  • New product validation 

  • Product performance testing 

  • Product launch activities 

  • Support the development of new testing methodologies. 

  • Supervise: 

  • Installation of test bed modifications 

  • Commissioning activities 

  • Infrastructure upgrades 

  • Recommend improvements to enhance testing capability and efficiency. 

10. Safety & Compliance 

  • Conduct safety audits in coordination with EHS teams. 

  • Ensure compliance with: 

  • Company safety policies  

  • Environmental regulations 

  • Identify and mitigate safety risks in test areas. 

  • Complete all mandatory compliance training and certifications. 

11. Continuous Learning & Software Skills 

  • Develop expertise in emerging chiller technologies and testing methodologies. 

  • Enhance skills in: 

  • Chiller Selection and Performance Analysis Software 

  • LabVIEW Data Acquisition Software 

  • Test Automation Systems 

  • Support digitalization and automation initiatives within testing operations. 

  • Continuously improve technical knowledge related to HVAC and refrigeration systems. 

 

Overall, Role Summary 

  • Lead end-to-end performance testing of Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers. 

  • Drive troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical problem-solving. 

  • Manage customer witness testing and third-party inspections. 

  • Ensure AHRI, NABL, and BEE compliance requirements are met. 

  • Maintain and improve test bed infrastructure, calibration systems, and certification readiness. 

  • Support new product development, certification activities, and testing innovation.
