Who are we and why should you care?

Teamleader is a SaaS scale-up born in 2012 in Ghent, Belgium, and part of the Visma Group since 2022. Our mission? To make work easier, not harder, for small and medium-sized businesses.

Here’s what we bring to the table:

  • Teamleader Focus: the all-in-one tool that helps small businesses optimise CRM, projects, and invoicing.

  • Teamleader One: the go-to e-invoicing software that self-employed pros can count on.

We’ve also been growing smarter through strategic acquisitions:

  • Teamleader Orbit (2019): helping medium-sized agencies thrive and scale.

  • Vectera (2022): powering seamless customer meetings.

  • Dexxter (2024): making financial admin a breeze for freelancers.

We Are Looking for a Senior/Lead Backend Engineer to join us

The first months you’ll be in a hands-on backend engineering role with a clear runway into leading a team.

To start you’ll own the backend of features and initiatives end-to-end for the Teamleader Focus product, built on a micro-service architecture mainly in PHP, and some Typescript.

Then we'll build your leadership path deliberately together: starting with technical leadership inside your team, then broadening into people and delivery leadership as you and the role are ready. We'd rather grow leads from engineers who've earned the team's trust than hire them in cold. You can have leadership experience or a clear ambition with evidence that you've been doing parts of it.

The biggest challenge is AI. It’s changing how our teams work and how we build the product itself. With every feature we ask what will the user do manually and what will AI take on. The shift touches almost everything we build. You’l be shaping it from the inside instead of reacting to it once it’s decided.

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer at Teamleader, you:

  • Are a key member of a cross-functional team, responsible for the backend of a feature or initiative. You turn functional challenges and acceptance criteria into skillfully crafted, easily maintainable application code.

  • Use your experience to pinpoint bugs, do root cause analysis, detect bad coding patterns, identify risks, and come up with solutions that hold up as templates for the next case.

  • Lead technical design discussions, inside your team and with other teams, to solve problems that are bigger than one team.

  • Keep a critical eye on API design and on where our abstractions are starting to leak.

  • Coach more junior engineers through pair programming, code reviews, or just by asking them the right questions.

  • Monitor the build, test, and deploy pipeline so your team's work reaches customers swiftly and safely.

  • Make things better, once you know the Teamleader way of doing things; process, tooling, code quality.

Growing into the lead role

The engineers we grow into leads tend to already do some of this before anyone asks them to:

  • Leading is several roles at once; managing, coaching, deciding, or just providing expertise. You recognise which to use in a specific moment.

  • A team is the sum of its parts and you use that. Your decisions are the conclusion of a team discussion, not a substitute for one.

  • You can be technical inside the team and clear to stakeholders outside it, being transparent even when the message isn't a fun one to bring.

  • How the team delivers matters to you, not only what you delivered.

How we work

Continuous flow (Kanban), no story points, no sprints. There are 4 Cross-functional teams working on Teamleader Focus with real ownership of their domain. Code review and pairing as the default, not the exception. There are supporting team for DevOps, QA and Mobile.

Why others chose Teamleader: we're lively, not corporate

We have the energy and boldness of a start-up and the expertise and pragmatism of a scale-up. The result: a team of both young and seasoned professionals led by supportive and approachable managers who give recognition and rewards for hard work. You’ll be working in a fast-paced tech environment with open feedback culture and room for initiatives as well as ideas. You’ll have plenty of room to apply your personality, express yourself, and impact our course of action with your insights or ideas.

On top of that, you’ll get:

  • An extensive training budget.

  • A hybrid working model: a pleasant mix of office and home working.

  • A personal tooling budget, to make working from home as comfortable as from our offices.

  • Daily budget-friendly in-house prepared lunch and dinner options (only in our Ghent office), as well as Friyays and numerous sport initiatives!

  • 32 holidays on top of the standard public ones! (based on full-time employment).

  • Our long-lasting dedication to employee well-being, just take a look at our career page and Instagram to see how we keep the Team(leader) spirit going.

We value diversity

Our ambition is to build and sell a product that helps everyone everywhere (starting with Europe) to work smarter, so we want our team to reflect that. We believe that a diverse, inclusive working environment is crucial to realise that ambition, so we’re committed to continue to build and cherish a culture where every colleague feels welcome, appreciated and heard.

You’d be a great fit for this role if you have:

  • At least 5 years of experience as a software engineer, in multi-team organisations and on larger software systems.

  • In-depth, hands-on experience with PHP and its ecosystem, and a thoughtful understanding of how modern web applications should work. — that's our codebase.

  • You are a craftsperson: you take pride in code quality, excellence of delivery, documentation, and refactors.

  • You run feasibility checks on multiple options and help the team prioritise.

  • What drives you are solid abstractions, clear technical designs, and pushing technical excellence — balanced with pragmatic reasoning about what ships.

  • Have good communication skills and consider yourself a team player, but you're not afraid to speak your mind strongly and convincingly to get your point across.

  • Are curious about AI-assisted development. We're rolling out agentic coding tooling across engineering and we want people who'll push on it rather than wait for it.

  • Express yourself fluently and friendly in English, spoken and written.

Bonus points:

  • Experience with DDD, CQRS, or event-driven architecture is a strong plus

  • Experience in SaaS product design and delivery.
