About this role

Be the Backbone of Recycling: Join Us as a Site Operative

Location: Frome HWRC
Salary: £12.92 per hour, paid at 40 hours per week

Working Pattern: 39 hours per week in winter / 41 hours per week in summer

A quick look at the role.

As a Site Operative at our Frome HWRC, you’ll play an important role in ensuring the site runs safely, efficiently and in line with environmental and operational requirements.

You’ll work directly with members of the public, helping them use the site safely and ensuring as much waste as possible is correctly segregated for recycling. This is a hands-on, outdoor role where no two days are the same.

Your core responsibilities.

  • Support the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the recycling centre.
  • Assist and advise members of the public with the safe disposal and segregation of their waste.
  • Help maximise recycling by ensuring waste is correctly sorted and segregated.
  • Direct and control site traffic to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and site users.
  • Monitor waste entering the site to ensure it complies with site licence requirements.
  • Assist with the safe handling and segregation of hazardous and special waste.
  • Keep the site clean, safe and well maintained, including basic housekeeping and maintenance duties.
  • Maintain site records and complete relevant paperwork accurately.
  • Help prevent unauthorised tipping, theft and other inappropriate use of the site.
  • Deliver excellent customer service and represent Biffa in a professional and positive manner.
  • Follow all health, safety, environmental and operational procedures at all times.
  • Work as part of a team to maintain high standards of service across the site.

Our essential requirements.

  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working directly with members of the public.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team and use your own initiative.
  • Able to deal confidently and professionally with difficult situations.
  • A good understanding of, or interest in, recycling and waste segregation.
  • Basic literacy, numeracy and record-keeping skills.
  • Reliable, self-motivated and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willing to work weekends and bank holidays, with rest days during the week.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.

Desirable.

  • Previous experience within the waste or recycling industry.
  • Basic health and safety knowledge.
  • Experience carrying out basic site maintenance or minor repairs.
  • Experience working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • A full driving licence.
