About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and maintain high-performance backend services and GraphQL APIs that power physician network growth, member engagement, and operational decision-making.
This role is focused on performance-oriented backend development using Node.js, TypeScript, NestJS, and GraphQL. You will design scalable backend services, build production-ready APIs, and collaborate with engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable software.
We're looking for someone with comprehensive knowledge of the NestJS framework, strong production experience with Apollo GraphQL, and a deep understanding of how GraphQL integrates into the NestJS application lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Build and maintain production GraphQL APIs using Apollo GraphQL and NestJS.
- Design backend architectures focused on performance, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Optimize GraphQL query execution, resolver performance, caching strategies, and DataLoader implementations.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to deliver high-quality backend solutions.
- Conduct code reviews and contribute to architectural decisions and engineering best practices.
- Deploy, monitor, and maintain applications in Azure and/or AWS.
- Use AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, etc.) while independently validating AI-generated code.
How You'll Succeed
- Deep, current hands-on experience building production backend applications with Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the NestJS framework and its architecture.
- Strong understanding of how Apollo GraphQL integrates with NestJS, including the request-response lifecycle and its interaction with application layers such as authentication, validation, dependency injection, and related architectural concepts.
- Build scalable backend systems with strong attention to performance, maintainability, and security.
- Communicate technical decisions clearly and collaborate effectively across engineering teams.
Who You Are
- Strong production experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the NestJS framework and production backend architecture.
- Strong experience building production GraphQL APIs using Apollo GraphQL.
- Experience designing secure, scalable backend systems.
- Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, Git, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Comfortable using AI coding assistants while independently reviewing and validating generated code.
- Strong communication skills and Agile development experience.
- Ability to demonstrate hands-on engineering experience through GitHub repositories, code samples, or technical interviews.
- Demonstrated contributions to open-source projects, public GitHub repositories, npm packages, or other publicly available technical work are highly desirable
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with GraphQL Federation or distributed GraphQL architectures.
- Experience deploying production applications on Azure and/or AWS.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with performance monitoring, observability, and distributed systems.
- Experience within healthcare or other regulated industries.
- Active participation in the JavaScript/TypeScript open-source ecosystem.
- Experience maintaining public GitHub repositories, npm packages, or other public technical projects
