About this role

Supervises the daily operations of the Ophthalmic Technician Services. Performs technical patient procedures to document and diagnose visual acuity. Serves as a central point of contact for coordinating patient care/patient flow within assigned area of responsibility. Collaborates with physicians, staff and other departments to enhance services. Supervises department staff. Ensures polices and procedure are adhered to. Develops and provides resident and fellow in-service/orientation for the ophthalmic technician services. Promotes and advocates for excellence in patient service standards.


Essential Duties

  • Supervises daily clinical operations and ensures efficient clinic flow. • Serves as a central point of contact for coordinating patient care/patient flow within assigned area of responsibility. • Establishes department performance standards. • Directly supervises all assigned subordinate staff. Assists in recruiting, hiring, and training staff. • Assigns, schedules, and prioritizes workload. • Assists in performance evaluations and competency evaluations and provides guidance and feedback to assigned staff. • Counsels, disciplines and/or terminates employees as required. Provides ongoing support and coaching in a constructive manner to increase employees' effectiveness. • Ensures employee time sheets are approved in a timely manner. Maintains and monitors budgeted FTE hours and productivity and explain/justify overages. • Takes necessary measures to bring overages in line with budgeted hours. • Provides weekly staffing schedule to ensure clinics are appropriately staffed. Assists in the coverage of clinic functions during times of illness, vacation, etc. • Manages staff times cards and vacation requests in Kronos. • Ensures employee time sheets are approved in a timely manner. Maintains and monitors budgeted FTE hours and productivity and explain/justify overages. • Takes necessary measures to bring overages in line with budgeted hours. • Develops and provides resident and fellow in-service/orientation for clinical services.

  • Participates in continuously assessing and improving clinic performance. • Evaluates systems to determine whether or not current policies and procedures are functioning and makes recommendations to clinic manager/director as needed.

  • Coordinates patient care/patient flow within service. Coordinates patient scheduling. • Acts as a liaison between medical staff and patients to answer questions. • Coordinates care and provides patient education.

  • Supervises facility billing for technical component. Ensures the appropriate charges are captured in a timely fashion. • Oversees department equipment and supplies and ensures the clinic is properly stocked and equipment is functional.

  • Assists with implementation of new policies and procedures to meet the goals and objectives of the department. • Enforces and ensures clinical operations are compliant with current policies and procedures. • Performs weekly audits of EMR documentation and provides education and training as appropriate. • Provides education to employs as needed. • Ensures, KNOWN standards or other patient improvement strategies adopted by the department are adhered to by clinic staff. • Promotes and advocates for excellence in patient service standards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Degree in a related field.

  • Req 5 years Ophthalmic technical experience in a clinical setting.

  • Req 2 years Lead/ supervisory experience.

  • Req Knowledge of medical procedures terminology and protocols.

  • Req Knowledge in administering diagnostic tests.

  • Req Knowledge of specialized equipment and instruments.

  • Req Demonstrates strong understanding of the information or data to identify and elevate opportunities.

  • Req Strong customer service experience.

  • Req Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Req Demonstrated ability and skills in computer, Microsoft Office and applicable software.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Certified Ophthalmic Technician (OCT)

  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $84,365.00 - $138,338.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
