   Academic Tutor Substitute Days: Monday- Thursday Hours: 12pm-5pm    Founded in 1997, Think Together partners with schools to change the odds for kids by providing award-winning programs during and outside the school day. JOB SUMMARY:

his position is part of a “substitute” pathway in partnership with the school district.The Academic Tutor Sub can be assigned to various sites across a school district, depending on daily needs arising from staff callouts. While there is not a guaranteed daily shift or location, the Sub must be ready to travel and cover assignments at different locations, as required. It is the responsibility of the Sub to respond and commit to covering open shifts as they become available in a timely manner. Facilitate and implement program activities; provide assigned instruction for school students; provide supervision of programs students.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate in-person small group tutoring sessions (ratio of 1 to 8), providing academic tutoring and closing learning gaps; support academic intervention, test prep, and skill building; track student progress and administer assessments. Focus specifically on K–12 academic subjects and gradelevel mastery, helping students performing 1–3 years below grade level reach grade-level proficiency.
• Implement effective classroom management, discipline, and instructional strategies.
• Set up activities daily; prepare and duplicate materials and lesson plans and operate instructional equipment. Monitor and evaluate the instruction and the students’ progress.
• Prepare lesson plans, quizzes, PowerPoints and other material to support effective learning.
• Prepare, create, and submit students’ progress reports that accurately document academic performance, learning outcomes, areas of growth, and opportunities for improvement.
• Research and recommend textbooks, software, equipment, or other learning materials that complement tutoring, enhance student engagement, address individual learning needs, and reinforce comprehension.
• Design, develop, and administer student assessments aligned with learning objectives to evaluate knowledge, track academic progress, identify learning needs, and inform instructional strategies.
• Engage students to identify specific areas of difficulty and learning gaps, using targeted questions and feedback to determine topics requiring further exploration and instructional support.
• Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.
• Maintain daily attendance sign-in/sign-out log and other records as required.
• Maintain the classroom or learning facility in a clean, organized and healthy manner; storage of materials is required daily.
• Supervise students in and out of the classroom during various activities.
• Maintain frequent and regular parent communication and support parent involvement.
• Attend staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development trainings on a weekly basis or as required. Commute to different school sites, as assigned.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

• Positive Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with students, families, school staff, and teammates. Academic Tutor must serve as positive role models and effective communicators.
• Commitment to Belonging: Sensitivity to and respect for the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities of students and families.
• Growth Mindset and Flexibility: Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and adapt to the evolving needs of the program and school site. Thrive in a rigorous environment.
• Experience with Youth Group: Previous experience working with young children in educational or recreational settings is highly preferred.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of 48 Semester/60 Quarter College Units or pass NCLB test.
• Education field preferred.
• 6–12+ months of tutoring or academic support experience required.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Enrolled in or have graduated from a college, university, or trade school.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting).
• Provide a clear TB test.
• Reliable transportation is required to meet the needs of the position. Must be able to drive from Administrative office to school sites.
• Employees who operate a personal or company vehicle related to work location requirements must maintain, and provide Human Resources, proof of a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Curriculum and instructional strategies appropriate to the assigned responsibility.
• Correct oral and written usage of English basic grammar, spelling, punctuation and math.
• Simple record-keeping and filing techniques.
• Appreciation of the community, city and school district cultures and languages.

• Demonstrate oral and written proficiency in English.
• Implement effective instructional school activities in the classroom.
• Learn the procedures and functions of assigned duties.
• Understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Tech Savy, able to search the internet for materials to support their lesson plans

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Learn, understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures, and policies. Understand and be sensitive to the needs and culture of school students.
• Work confidentially with discretion.
• Perform simple clerical duties.
• Perform the essential functions of the job.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

• Indoor/outdoor classroom and playground environment.
• Moderate noise (examples: typical school noise with children at play).

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

• Seeing to monitor student work and read materials.
• Hearing and speaking accurately to exchange information.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate instructional equipment.
• Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
• Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
• Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding thirty (30) pounds.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

• Must be available M-F for the entire shift schedule.
• Must be willing to travel to other sites to cover staff callouts.
• Responsible to respond and commit to covering open shifts as they become available.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

• Word processing
• Use typical office equipment, e-mail, and internet software.
• Web browsing and electronic file management.
• Zoom, Google Classroom, and other digital platforms.

Compensation: $24.00 per hour
