Ambulance Technician (ECA)

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Ambulance Technician (ECA) to join our team based in South Thames Retrieval Service at Evalina London Children’s Hospital, SE1 7EH.

 

Join EMED Group's dedicated STRS transport team and help specialist clinicians retrieve and safely transfer critically ill children. You will work as part of a close multidisciplinary team, maintaining a mobile intensive-care environment and supporting children and families during urgent, highly sensitive journeys.

A FREC4 (First Response Emergency Care Level 4), Blue Light Driving qualification (e.g. CERAD) with a minimum of 2 years’ experience and a C1 driving licence are required for this position.

Other duties include:

• Work alongside the STRS Retrieval Lead and Retrieval Nurse to keep two specialist retrieval teams ready 24 hours a day.
• Prepare and check the ambulance, clinical equipment, retrieval kits, trolley, Babypod, monitor, ventilator, pumps, and medical gases.
• Drive safely under emergency-response conditions when clinically authorised, applying road-risk and fatigue controls.
• Support patient preparation, safe securing and loading under the direction of the clinical team.
• Assist with CPR, equipment preparation and other tasks within your competence when directed by the Retrieval Lead.
• Provide calm, compassionate, and trauma-informed support to parents and carers.
• Complete vehicle, equipment, infection-prevention, and readiness checks and promptly escalate defects or shortages.
• Maintain accurate electronic records and communicate operational updates to STRS and EMED control colleagues.
• Participate in simulation, reflective debriefs, incident learning and continuous service improvement.
• Support aeromedical tasking and flight-stretcher preparation when required.

To be considered as an ECA, you will need to be:

 

• A full UK manual driving licence with C1 entitlement.
• At least two years' blue-light emergency-driving experience.
• FREC 4 and CERAD, or the ability to complete and pass the required training before independent deployment.
• The ability to pass an enhanced DBS check and occupational-health assessment.
• Physical capability for patient handling, equipment movement, and prolonged emergency-response duties.
• Clear, compassionate communication and the resilience to support critically ill children and distressed families.
• A reliable, safety-focused, and collaborative approach to working within a specialist clinical team.
• An effective communicator and experience of communicating with others in what can often be emotional circumstances.
• Pass an Enhanced DBS check (company funded).
• Lift and carry patients e.g. up and down stairs in and out of their homes, to and from the ambulance and load patients in and out of the ambulance using stretchers or other lifting equipment.
• Transfer patients from beds to stretchers, chairs to chairs or similar both in and out of hospital.
