About this role

Assistant Editor (Contract)

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid — Must be based in Toronto or willing to be in-office when required on editing days)

Contract Duration: Approx. mid-September - mid-December

Company Overview

Salt is a North American marketing agency that creates connected experiences through creative, digital & media innovation.

Our mission is to “Earn the World’s Attention” and Salt is built to find, develop, execute, and amplify the ideas that are worthy of our clients’ audiences. We’ve structured our agency to do what’s right for our clients – to connect different perspectives, to work across mediums, and to focus on delivering meaningful, effective results.

We’re committed to living up to the values in our name. “Salt of The Earth” means we value collaborative, humble, hard-working people here. We’re looking for people who are as smart as they are kind because we believe the right talent and the right culture help us do what’s right for our clients.

Position Overview

We are looking for a versatile, detail-oriented, and technically sharp Assistant Editor to join our post-production team. In this role, you will be the backbone of our editing workflows, supporting our senior editors, directors, and post-production supervisors from ingest to final delivery.

You possess a deep understanding of post-production pipelines, stellar organizational skills, and a passion for storytelling. Whether you are managing complex proxy workflows, prepping timelines, or pulling selects for fast-paced social and commercial projects, you thrive in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Setup & Ingest: Manage media offloading, verify checksums, organize project directories, and transcode footage to established post-production specs.
  • Timeline & Asset Management: Build and maintain organized NLE project files (Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve), manage sync maps, group multi-cam clips, and archive completed projects.
  • Post-Production Support: Support the post-production workflow by building and refining rough cuts, executing revisions, completing brand packaging including captions and brand checks, and maintaining well-organized project files and assets for handovers.
  • Finishing & Delivery Prep: Assist in locking cuts, prepping audio packages for mix (OMF/AAF), colour grading turnovers, and exporting multi-platform deliverables according to strict technical spec sheets.
  • Workflow Optimization: Maintain and troubleshoot shared storage systems (NAS/SAN), proxy pipelines, media transfers, backups, and asset management systems to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Generative AI (Bonus Skill): Familiarity with Generative AI tools and workflows for image and video generation, with the ability to support creative and post-production needs using AI-generated assets when required.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Location: Must currently reside in Toronto (or the Greater Toronto Area) or be fully willing to commute to the office on-site as required for collaborative editing days.
  • Experience: 2+ years of professional experience as an Assistant Editor or Post-Production Coordinator within a commercial production house, digital agency, or broadcast environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced command of Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve; working knowledge of After Effects is a strong plus.
  • Pipeline Knowledge: Deep familiarity with modern codecs, frame rates, colour spaces, proxy workflows, and audio/video delivery specs for digital, social, and broadcast platforms.
  • Organization: Exceptional attention to detail with proven ability to multitask, manage tight turnarounds, and maintain file hygiene under pressure.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, proactive attitude and a willingness to learn from senior creative staff.

Salt XC is committed to Equal Employment Opportunity and to attracting and retaining the most qualified employees regardless of race, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age or disability.
