UIPTD is seeking experienced CAD Technicians to join our UIPTD T&D engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing and managing engineering drawings for 33–400kV OHL and UGC schemes delivered for clients including SSE, SPEN, NGED, and National Grid, working closely with design engineers to produce high-quality, client-standard deliverables across the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Drawing Production
Produce engineering drawings to client and UIPTD standards, including: route maps and corridor plans, profile drawings (longitudinal sections), wire clearance diagrams (WCDs), tower general arrangement and structure drawings, foundation arrangement drawings, and setting-out drawings for OHL and/or cable route plans and alignment drawings, cable trench and duct bank cross-section drawings, joint bay arrangement and construction detail drawings, sealing end compound general arrangement drawings, link box and cross-bonding layout drawings, HDD and trenchless crossing drawings, and reinstatement and surface finish drawings for UGC
Prepare and update asset, plant and material schedules
Produce as-built drawings following construction phase, incorporating site mark-ups and RFI outcomes
Convert survey data into production-quality engineering drawings
Produce drawings in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation to client-specified drawing standards
Document Control & Management
Manage drawing registers and ensure all documents are correctly named, numbered, and controlled in line with project document control procedures
Upload and manage drawings within document management systems (Oracle, Projectwise, or equivalent)
Coordinate drawing issue and revision cycles, including tracking review comments and incorporating mark-ups from engineers and clients
Maintain and update drawing schedules and transmittal records throughout the project lifecycle
Collaboration & Technical Support
Work closely with design engineers to understand scheme requirements and translate engineering intent into accurate drawings
Attend design team meetings and contribute to drawing production planning and programme management
Support engineers in the production of presentation drawings and client-facing materials
Provide drawing QA checks on own outputs and those of other team members where required
Assist with GIS data preparation and route corridor mapping using ArcGIS or equivalent
Quality & Standards
Ensure all drawing outputs comply with relevant client CAD standards (SSE, SPEN, NGED, etc.) and UIPTD internal drawing standards
Apply correct title block information, revision history, and drawing metadata to all outputs
Maintain awareness of drawing conventions and standards relevant to the role
Requirements
Essential
Minimum 5 years of CAD experience in an engineering environment, with specific experience in T&D or power infrastructure drawing production
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD; experience of Civil3D and MicroStation desirable
Experience of producing T&D specific drawings
Familiarity with T&D drawing conventions and the ability to read and interpret engineering calculations and survey data
Experience of working within a formal document control system
Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, consistent drawings to a high standard
Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline design team
Desirable
Experience of producing drawings to SSE, SPEN, NGED, or National Grid CAD standards
Familiarity with PLS-CADD outputs and the ability to interpret sag-tension model results
Proficiency in producing 3D models
Experience of GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) for route corridor mapping and collaborative working
Experience of Civil3D software
HNC/HND or degree in Engineering, Technical Drawing, or related discipline
Experience of schemes at 132kV or above
Experience of working on EPC or framework contracts in a DNO/TNO environment
