What you'll do

  • Attends shift briefings; maintains a presence on College property; patrols assigned areas including grounds and parking lots; conducts internal patrols of buildings
  • Checks for vandalism, suspicious activity or persons, or safety/fire hazards; checks doors and windows of buildings to assure they are tightly closed and locked
  • Notes in written logs any unlocked doors/window and submits information to supervisor
  • Responds to alarms and dispatched calls such as thefts or liquor law violations; conducts tests and inspections; de-escalates aggressive behaviors; performs traffic control as needed
  • Alerts visitors of infractions as well as removing unwanted or disruptive visitors from College property
  • Takes reasonable and safe efforts to detain trespassers or law violators on-site until the arrival of a law enforcement officer; and assesses collected information and takes reasonable corrective actions.
  • Compiles and writes reports regarding reportable incidents; identifies activities requiring follow-up.
  • Receives and disseminates clear and concise information via portable radio, telephone, verbal, and written communications.
  • Renders basic first aid to injured persons.
  • Participates in various emergency response drills and training exercises.
  • Submitting information to the Public Safety Supervisor.
  • Safely operates a motor vehicle and golf cart as needed.

JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, this position maintains the security and safety of people and property for the College.  Duties include; observing activity and traffic in assigned area; ensuring enforcement of College rules/regulations; and investigating, correcting, and/or reporting hazards and unusual or suspicious circumstances to the Campus Safety Supervisor for correction or follow-up action.

  • Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as medium work involving lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.

Physical Demand Level:

Light to Medium Work. The position primarily involves vehicle-based patrol using a golf cart, with intermittent walking, standing, and limited lifting requirements.

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

  • Ability to patrol college property using a golf cart or other designated campus vehicle for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk moderate distances on campus to respond to incidents, inspect facilities, provide assistance, and conduct security checks.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while monitoring activities, directing traffic, or assisting students, employees, and visitors.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach as necessary to perform inspections and respond to routine service calls.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate a golf cart, motor vehicle, radio communications equipment, computers, surveillance systems, and other security technology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, radio, and electronic communication systems.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to observe campus activities, identify safety concerns, read reports, monitor camera systems, and safely operate vehicles.
  • Hearing ability sufficient to receive and interpret radio transmissions, alarms, emergency notifications, and verbal communications.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies, which may require walking quickly, climbing stairs, or assisting individuals to safety.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and other environmental conditions common to Florida.
  • Frequent operation of a golf cart or similar campus vehicle during patrol activities.
  • Interaction with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and external emergency responders.
  • May respond to accidents, medical emergencies, behavioral incidents, and other situations requiring sound judgment and prompt action.
  • May be required to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Position requires maintaining alertness, situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm and professional during stressful situations.
