Job Description:

Summary:

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) seeks a creative and reliable student photographer to capture images that showcase the energy, people, and spaces that make up the AU community. The photographer will support CAS marketing and communications efforts by documenting events, research, performances, and campus life for use on social media, the CAS website, digital screens, and print materials. 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Photograph CAS events, lectures, performances, and student activities on and around campus.

  • Capture high-quality portraits of students, faculty, and staff for profiles and stories.

  • Edit and organize digital images for use across university communication platforms.

  • Collaborate with CAS communications staff to plan and execute visual storytelling projects.

  • Maintain organized photo archives and submit images in a timely manner.

  • Uphold university brand standards and ensure proper image rights and releases.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • 5 - 10 hours per week.

​Salary Range: 

  • $18.40 - $20.00 per hour.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Current American University student.

  • Demonstrated experience with digital photography (DSLR or mirrorless).

  • Proficiency in Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop.

  • Strong attention to detail and creative eye for composition and lighting.

  • Excellent time management and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend events.

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Experience with event photography or photojournalism.

  • Familiarity with AU’s campus, student organizations, and CAS programs.

  • Basic video shooting or editing skills (optional but a plus).

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Please submit the following materials: resume, portfolio or link to recent photography work (5–10 samples preferred), and a brief statement of interest describing your photography experience and availability.

  • Flexible scheduling around class commitments.

  • Proficiency editing and creating content (photo and video) for Instagram.

  • Depending on the candidate hired, there may be an opportunity to support broader social media content creation.
