Job Summary

The Coating & Insulation Superintendent will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, supervision, and control of surface preparation, blasting, painting/coating, insulation, cladding, and jacketing activities across an oil & gas plant construction project.

The role will ensure that all activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved project specifications, drawings, method statements, ITPs, international standards, and client requirements. The Superintendent will provide strong site leadership, manage multiple work fronts, optimize manpower and resources, and coordinate closely with Construction, Engineering, QA/QC, Planning, HSE, Procurement, and Client/PMC teams to achieve project milestones.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all coating, painting, insulation, cladding, and jacketing activities across multiple construction work fronts.
• Develop and implement execution plans, work schedules, manpower requirements, and resource plans in line with project milestones.
• Supervise surface preparation activities, including abrasive blasting, cleaning, inspection, coating application, curing, touch-up, and repair works.
• Oversee insulation installation for process piping, equipment, vessels, tanks, ducts, and other facilities, including thermal insulation, cold insulation, vapor barriers, weatherproofing, and associated systems.
• Supervise installation of aluminum/stainless-steel cladding, jacketing, bands, seals, supports, and accessories in accordance with approved details.
• Ensure all activities comply with approved IFC drawings, project specifications, method statements, ITPs, material specifications, and applicable international standards such as NACE/AMPP, SSPC, and ISO.
• Coordinate closely with QA/QC to ensure required inspections, testing, DFT checks, surface profile measurements, holiday testing, adhesion testing, and other applicable inspections are completed and accepted.
• Liaise with Client, PMC, third-party inspectors, Engineering, Planning, HSE, and other disciplines to resolve technical and execution-related issues.
• Manage and provide direction to Supervisors, General Foremen, Foremen, Technicians, Applicators, Insulators, Blasters, Painters, and supporting manpower.
• Monitor daily productivity, manpower utilization, equipment availability, material consumption, and work-front readiness.
• Ensure coating and insulation materials are properly received, stored, handled, mixed, applied, and preserved as per manufacturer and project requirements.
• Review and monitor work permits, access requirements, scaffolding, environmental conditions, ventilation, lighting, and other prerequisites before commencing work.
• Ensure strict compliance with HSE requirements for blasting, painting, confined spaces, work at height, lifting activities, chemical handling, and insulation works.
• Identify potential delays, constraints, rework, quality issues, and productivity gaps and implement timely corrective actions.
• Coordinate with Planning to monitor planned vs. actual progress, productivity, recovery schedules, and critical activities.
• Support mechanical completion, punch-list clearance, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and final handover activities.
• Prepare and review daily/weekly progress reports, manpower reports, productivity reports, material requirements, and construction forecasts.
• Ensure proper control and reduction of rework, material wastage, coating failures, and construction defects.
• Participate in inspections, walkdowns, technical meetings, progress meetings, and coordination meetings with Client/PMC.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to supervisory teams and continuously improve site execution, productivity, quality, and safety performance.

Key Technical Competencies

• Strong expertise in industrial coating and protective painting systems, including surface preparation, abrasive blasting, primer/intermediate/topcoat systems, curing, touch-up, and repair.
• Sound knowledge of thermal, cryogenic, acoustic, and personnel-protection insulation systems.
• Experienced in cladding and jacketing systems, including aluminium, stainless steel, and associated accessories.
• Good understanding of coating inspection requirements, environmental controls, DFT, surface profile, dew point, adhesion, holiday testing, and coating repair procedures.
• Knowledge of applicable NACE/AMPP, SSPC, ISO, ASTM, project, and client standards.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, piping drawings, equipment drawings, isometrics, specifications, coating schedules, insulation schedules, and ITPs.
• Strong understanding of construction sequencing and interfaces with piping, mechanical, structural, E&I, scaffolding, and commissioning teams.
• Ability to manage multiple work fronts and deliver activities against demanding project schedules.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Construction, or a related discipline.
• 12–20 years of relevant experience in coating, painting, insulation, cladding, and jacketing works within Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Refinery, LNG, Gas Processing, or major industrial construction projects.
• Minimum 10 years in a Superintendent / Senior Supervisory / Construction leadership role.
• Proven experience managing large manpower teams and multiple work fronts on major EPC projects.
• Experience working with EPC Contractors, Clients, PMC Consultants, and Third-Party Inspection agencies.
• Strong exposure to brownfield/greenfield oil & gas plant construction and shutdown/turnaround environments will be an advantage.
• Relevant NACE/AMPP or coating inspection certification will be an added advantage.
