Community Support Worker (2026-103)

REQUIREMENTS

• Community or School Support Worker Certificate or other relevant education
• • Minimum 1 year of related experience working with individuals with cognitive, physical, and other diverse abilities with varying and complex needs
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Valid BC Class 5 license (Class 4 considered an asset)
• Clean 5 year drivers abstract
• Following training is required and provided to the successful candidate free of charge. Existing certification is an asset: CPR-C, Mandt-RC, Safe Food Handling, Medication Management, Anti-Bullying and Harassment, CLBC Privacy
• Physical requirements of the job include supporting individuals in wheelchairs, or walkers, lifting, transferring, using lifts appropriately, pushing, pulling, bending, and assisting clients safely in and out of vehicles, etc. (Necessary on-the-job training is provided to ensure the safety of the participant and worker.)
• Criminal record check with vulnerable sector search.
• This job requires union membership with a 1.85% union due deducted from pay.

ABOUT THE JOB:

The Community Support Worker, as a member of the Vista Day Program, supports seniors with diverse abilities to reach their potential and enhance their quality of life. Provides activities and opportunities that:

• enhance participants’ independence and confidence
• build relationships and social skills
• improve physical and emotional health
• encourage meaningful and rewarding community connections.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Supports clients in recreational activities including sports, crafts, and participation in the community. Transports clients in agency van(s) to activities.
• Supports clients with mobility challenges as needed by providing physical support, which may include assisting with walkers, pushing/pulling wheelchairs using the Hoyer lift, etc.
• Monitors personal care and health needs and performs personal care as needed.
• Collaborates with participants, their caregivers, and other professionals to assess individual needs and assist participants to develop and attain individual goals.
• Administers medication as needed, strictly adhering to agency medication policies and procedures.
• Ensures accurate and timely documentation.

• Interact effectively and support individuals with physical and developmental diverse abilities
• Provide appropriate recreational and other community inclusion activities
• Provide life skills support and development
• Provide personal care as required
• Perform home tasks such as housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, etc.
• Administer medication following agency procedures
• Recognize, analyze, and deal effectively and proactively with difficult behaviours
• Handle crisis situations effectively using appropriate intervention techniques
• Work independently and as a member of a team
• Problem-solve effectively
• Document and report information in written format
• Manage conflicts effectively and maintain positive working relationships with all parties involved
• Collaborate with other professionals, co-workers, and supervisors
• Provide person-centered services in a professional and creative way
• Advocate for people with diverse abilities within the community

PROGRAM: Deserg Gardens Day Program-NEW!

LOCATION: Kamloops, BC

NUMBER OF VACANCIES: Two (2)

STATUS: Temporary Full-Time

TERM: 12 months with the possibility of extension

HOURS of WORK: 35 hours per week

SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday between 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (in accordance with Handidart schedule requirements)

REPORTS TO: Desert Gardens Day Program Coordinator

COMPENSATION: $27.53-$31.57 per hour (Grid 10 as per collective agreement)
