Position Summary

The Cumulative Effects and Guardian Manager is responsible for overseeing LNIB’s Land Guardian Program and advancing the Cumulative Effects Program within the Nlaka’pamux Traditional Territory. This position ensures LNIB continues to protect and steward its lands, waters, and cultural resources by guiding Land Guardian staff, coordinating delivery of environmental monitoring projects, and building collaborative relationships with community, governments, and industry.

The Lead will bridge traditional knowledge systems with western science, supporting cultural continuity, environmental stewardship, and community well-being while strengthening LNIB’s Title and Rights interests. In short, through environmental protection and restoration, and helping connecting community rights holders to the cultural resources on the land base, the two-eyed seeing paradigm of the Land Guardians reawakens the agency our rights holders exercised over the territory and its resources that stewarded it sustainably since time immemorial.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Oversight

· Provide supervision, mentorship, and scheduling for the Land Guardian team.

· Ensure Guardians receive training, equipment, and support to work safely and effectively in the field.

· Integrate traditional knowledge, cultural protocols, and community values into Guardian and stewardship activities.

· Guide Guardians in delivering monitoring programs (wildlife, vegetation, air quality, cultural heritage).

· Report on Land Guardian activities to LNIB leadership, community members, and funding partners.

Environmental Stewardship & Cumulative Effects

· Oversee environmental monitoring and cumulative effects projects across terrestrial and cultural systems.

· Review and interpret environmental assessments, technical reports, and resource development proposals, providing recommendations to LNIB.

· Identify, track, and report risks or violations affecting LNIB’s lands, waters, and resources.

· Ensure accurate data collection, storage, and reporting for monitoring activities.

Cultural Stewardship and Community Connection

· Support community engagement activities such as youth-on-the-land programming, culture camps, harvesting activities, and Elder–youth mentorship.

· Create opportunities for community members to connect with stewardship and restoration project work LNIB is planning or implementing on the land.

· Help target aspect of cultural and resource connection that our community would like to enhance or revitalize, take direction from knowledge holders and membership at large while targeting all segments with programming: youth, elders, young adults, adults and families.

· Utilize both on-the-land (in the language) model with intergenerational sharing as well as new media opportunities (video, audio, social media) and bring cultural resources into the community and classrooms to make more accessible to more membership.

Research, Funding & Capacity Building

· Conduct and oversee research on historical and current land/resource use.

· Develop and implement guardian program work plan and budgets.

· Prepare project budgets, proposals, and funding applications to support program sustainability.

· Build Guardian capacity through training, professional development, and mentorship opportunities.

Collaboration & Representation

· Represent LNIB at technical tables, meetings, workshops, and engagement sessions with governments, industry, and partner First Nations.

· Communicate clearly and respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, LNIB members, and external partners.

· Strengthen partnerships to advance LNIB’s stewardship, cultural, and environmental goals.

Other Duties

· Ensure compliance with LNIB policies, workplace safety requirements, and field safety standards.

· Support LNIB’s emergency response plans during declared emergencies, as required.

· Carry out other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Strong knowledge of Nlaka’pamux culture, language, and traditional resource practices, or a demonstrated commitment to learning.

· Understanding of environmental management, cumulative effects, and Indigenous stewardship principles.

· Leadership and supervisory skills, with experience managing teams or programs.

· Ability to communicate technical information to both community members and external audiences.

· Competence with Microsoft Office 365 and GIS/mapping platforms (Avenza, ArcGIS, QGIS).

· Understanding of Trail Cameras, Bat Acoustic Recording Units, and Air Monitoring Equipment.

· Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

· Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.

· Respect for Indigenous and Western knowledge systems and ability to bring them together in decision-making.

Qualifications

· Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and reliable transportation (mandatory).

· Post-secondary education in natural resource management, environmental science, or related field (preferred).

· Minimum five (5) years of experience in environmental monitoring, stewardship, or resource management, with preference for cumulative effects or Indigenous Guardian program experience.

· Demonstrated ability to supervise staff, manage projects, and work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

· Technical certifications (Bear Awareness, Wilderness First Aid, ATV/UTV, etc.) considered strong assets.

· Clear understanding of Indigenous Title and Rights, and the political and cultural context of resource management.

Working Conditions

· Fast-paced environment balancing office work, community engagement, and field activities.

· Physically fit, able to work long hours outdoors and in all weather conditions.

· Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.

· Regular travel within the Nlaka’pamux Traditional Territory.

· Participation in fieldwork alongside Guardian staff as required.
