Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Hualapai Tribal Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police assists with the overall planning, development, management, and direction of the Hualapai Tribe’s Police Department. The Deputy Chief accomplishes these responsibilities through community-oriented policing and by developing strong police-community partnerships.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

•  Gain and maintain the respect of Police Department members, Tribal Administration, and   residents of the   Hualapai Reservation.
•  Work collaboratively with team members, elected officials, directors, and staff.
•  Build and maintain effective relationships with tribal, local, county, state, and federal law   enforcement agencies,   the community, and the media.
•  Demonstrate leadership and technical skills with comprehensive knowledge of modern law   enforcement   principles and practices.
•  Maintain excellent interpersonal skills and effective working relationships with subordinates and   others.
•  Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
•  Assist with overall operations including management, planning, directing, daily operations,   personnel matters,   property, and fiscal management.
•  Work outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and in adverse weather   conditions.
•  Serve as Acting Chief of Police in the absence of the Chief.
•  Possess thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal, and jurisdictional laws as they   pertain to the   Hualapai Reservation.
•  Apply proper law enforcement and investigative procedures, including search and seizure,   questioning, and   arrests.
•  Must be Arizona POST certified and deputized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) with a Special Law   Enforcement Office Commission (SLEC).
•  Demonstrate supervisory skills and techniques to lead a diverse and productive workforce.
•  Plan, organize, and reprioritize work to meet changing deadlines.
•  Proficient in the use of firearms and less-lethal weapons.
•  Must reside on the Hualapai Reservation or within a 45-minute drive.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

•  Bachelor’s degree plus five (5) years of law enforcement experience, including three (3) years at the command/     supervisory level with responsibility for patrols, criminal investigations, and administrative management; OR
•  Any combination of education, professional training, and work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform Deputy Chief of Police duties.
•  Minimum of ten (10) years with the Hualapai Tribal Police Department.
•  At least 21 years of age and possession of a valid driver’s license.
•  Must pass an MVR screening, medical examination, polygraph examination, and comprehensive background   investigation.
•  Current Arizona POST certification in good standing.
•  No disciplinary actions or internal investigations within the last six (6) months.
•  Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
•  Organized, punctual, and able to follow written guidelines and procedures.
•  Ability to write clear and complete reports daily.
•  Completion and passing of Command Certification through BIA.
•  Arizona Post Supervisor Certification.
•  Completion of the FBI Leadership Trilogy within six (6) months of appointment.
•  Performs other duties as assigned.
