Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a Digital Producer who thrives on speed, creativity, and innovation to join its audience engagement team. This role is at the centre of how audiences experience our journalism — whether through newsletters or conversations with readers both on and off platform.

As part of the audience engagement team, you’ll experiment with new ways of connecting with our community through newsletters, commenting and off-site platforms like Reddit. You will help shape stories and package them for maximum impact. We’re looking for someone who works well within the urgency of a live news environment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound editorial judgment, command of digital publishing systems, and fluency in the latest tools and techniques of audience engagement. This team operates seven days a week. Early morning, late evening, and weekend work will be required.

What You'll Do

Produce newsletters daily: Build, schedule, and deploy newsletters across the Star's portfolio, ensuring consistent delivery to readers' inboxes every day of the week.

Write and curate newsletter content: Draft light copy and curate story selections for newsletters, working alongside team of newsletter writers and editors.

Be responsive to breaking news: Monitor developing stories and be prepared to write timely inserts — such as a breaking news update into a morning newsletter — when major events require a fast response.

Manage Reddit engagement: Post and engage in communities across subreddits, fostering audience relationships and growing the Star's presence on the platform — with a focus on evenings and weekends.

Spark reader engagement: Curate and moderate reader commenting on thestar.com and participate in conversations, representing the Star with editorial judgment and community care.

Support audience growth: Use analytics and platform insights to track engagement, identify opportunities, and help the team execute on audience-building strategies.
