The estimated pay range for this role is $17.00-$26.00/hour.

About the Opportunity

FirstEnergy Service Company is seeking motivated students interested in occupational health and safety to join our Safety Co-Op Program. This full-time, on-site rotational program provides hands-on experience supporting safety initiatives across Transmission & Distribution, Regulated Generation, and Corporate Safety functions. Participants gain meaningful utility and generation industry experience while contributing to FirstEnergy’s commitment to safety, reliability, and operational excellence.

Assignments are full-time and on-site within FirstEnergy’s operating footprint, which includes Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. Students are expected to devote full attention to the co-op assignment during regular business hours. 

Program Highlights

• Three-semester rotational experience with exposure to multiple safety disciplines. Rotations will be between Transmission & Distribution, Generation, and Corporate Safety.
• Personalized development plan, on-the-job training, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. 
• Safety-related project assignment during each rotation with executive-level presentation opportunities. 
• Collaboration with safety professionals, operations leadership, and frontline employees. 
• Potential pathway to full-time employment following graduation. 
• Single semester internship opportunities are also available based on student’s background.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with workplace inspections, field observations, audits, and hazard assessments. 
• Support incident investigations, corrective action tracking, and learning team activities. 
• Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and safety awareness initiatives. 
• Review and update safety procedures, policies, and documentation. 
• Collect, analyze, and report safety performance metrics and trends. 
• Support regulatory compliance activities, risk assessments, and continuous improvement projects. 
• Work alongside Safety Representatives to strengthen safety culture and operational risk management. 

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or a related field. 
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA preferred. 
• Sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate-level standing preferred. 
• Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. 
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. 
• Ability to work effectively in both office and field environments while complying with safety requirements. 
• Ability to commit to a minimum of two (2) Co-Op rotations preferred.
• Ability to work without employment sponsorship now or in the future.
• Must have reliable transportation.
