What you'll do

  • Build and maintain detailed operating and financial models, including quarterly and annual production forecasts by asset and product stream, three-statement financials, and net asset value (NAV) build-ups
  • Update models for quarterly results, reserve reports, guidance revisions, and M&A/A&D transactions; reconcile actuals to estimates and identify variances
  • Extract and interpret data from SEDAR+ filings (MD&A, financial statements, AIFs, NI 51-101 reserve statements), investor presentations, and provincial well and production databases (geoSCOUT & XI AssetBook)
  • Maintain comparable company and precedent transaction analyses, price decks, and sector screens
  • Draft sections of initiation reports, quarterly earnings notes, company updates, and industry thematics
  • Support the analyst on client calls, marketing trips, conferences, and corporate access events
  • Comply with guidelines with respect to professional conduct (e.g. CFA institute standards of practice).

  • A university degree in a financial or business-oriented discipline (i.e. BComm or MBA). A technical discipline (i.e. engineering or geology) is a plus;
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a capital markets, corporate finance and/or a technical oil & gas role;
  • Advanced Excel skills and demonstrated financial modeling ability; comfort building formula-driven, auditable models from scratch
  • Exceptional attention to detail, plus demonstrated writing/communication skills;
  • Strong quantitative skills;
  • A commitment to working independently under strict time constraints that requires flexibility with respect to hours, days, and tasks.

Nice to have

  • A technical discipline (i.e. engineering or geology) is a plus;
  • A CFA designation, or working towards one, is desired but not necessary;

The Opportunity
Roth Canada is looking to add an Equity Research Associate to support a Senior Energy Research Analyst covering Canadian oil and gas producers: conventional and unconventional E&Ps, oil sands, and royalty companies, with an emphasis on SMID-cap names across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. The Equity Research Associate is responsible for research, client support, data collection, and statistical studies on industries and individual companies and their securities. Through training and on-the-job experience, the Research Associate learns the techniques and develops the skills necessary to research and analyze investment securities and to prepare and present investment recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate must be a quick learner with a keen interest in understanding the oil and gas industry from operational, technological, and financial perspectives, as well as a desire to master the art of researching and analyzing data.
  • A university degree in a financial or business-oriented discipline (i.e. BComm or MBA). A technical discipline (i.e. engineering or geology) is a plus;
  • A CFA designation, or working towards one, is desired but not necessary;
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a capital markets, corporate finance and/or a technical oil & gas role;
