Position Summary

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Financial Reporting and Compliance Specialist plays an important role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the College’s financial reporting and compliance activities. This position supports monthly and annual financial statement preparation, complex reconciliations, government reporting, technical accounting research, and external audit activities while helping strengthen financial policies, controls, and processes.

As a trusted resource within Finance, you will apply your technical accounting expertise and knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) to support sound financial decisions and consistent accounting practices. You will work collaboratively with Finance teams and departments across the College to analyze financial information, resolve complex accounting matters, and ensure reporting requirements are met accurately and efficiently.

What You'll Be Doing:

Financial Reporting

You will prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, supporting schedules, journal entries, and working papers, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete, and compliant with PSAS. You will lead complex balance sheet reconciliations, analyze financial results and significant variances, and provide insights and recommendations to support sound accounting and reporting practices.

Working closely with the Financial Controller, you will support year-end financial statement preparation and external audit activities by preparing audit schedules, responding to audit inquiries, and implementing audit recommendations. You will also provide technical guidance to Finance team members on appropriate accounting treatment and consistent application of financial definitions and reporting requirements.

Government Reporting and Compliance

Coordinate and prepare financial reports and submissions required by the provincial ministry responsible for Advanced Education, as well as other government agencies and external stakeholders. This includes ensuring submissions are accurate, complete, timely, and aligned with applicable legislation, PSAS, and reporting requirements.

Interpret evolving ministry guidelines and requirements and translate them into effective reporting processes. You will reconcile government submissions to the general ledger and audited financial statements, coordinate the collection and validation of financial information from departments, and maintain the documentation, procedures, and internal controls that support reliable reporting. You will also identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and automation of government reporting processes.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

Build strong working relationships across Finance and with operational departments, partnering with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Budget, and other teams to address complex accounting and reporting matters. You will communicate financial information clearly, provide thoughtful recommendations, and help stakeholders understand the implications of financial results and reporting requirements.

Support special projects, system implementations, ERP optimization, and strategic Finance initiatives. This may include preparing reports and analyses for internal leaders, government and regulatory bodies, and other external stakeholders, as well as identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, controls, reporting, and service delivery.

What Sets You Apart

You are a CPA-designated accounting professional with strong experience in financial reporting, technical accounting, and regulatory compliance. You bring solid knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), financial statement preparation, variance analysis, and government reporting requirements.

You are analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to research accounting standards, interpret complex requirements, and translate them into practical policies, processes, and recommendations. Experience with ERP systems and Microsoft Dynamics 365 is an asset, along with an interest in process improvement, automation, and reporting optimization.

You are highly organized and able to manage competing priorities and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality. You bring a strong sense of integrity, accountability, and resilience, along with a commitment to continuous improvement. A clear communicator who can build effective relationships across Finance and the broader organization, explain complex financial information to diverse audiences, and provide practical recommendations that support informed decision-making.
