What you'll do

  • Independently plan and execute a set of related tasks or a feature area, from ticket through to deployment.
  • Break down ambiguous or loosely specified tasks into a concrete implementation plan, checking in at key decision points rather than requiring step-by-step direction.
  • Design, write, test, and ship software across the frontend and backend, with a primary focus on frontend development.
  • Build user interfaces for configuring, running, and monitoring computational workflows.
  • Contribute to backend APIs, workflow execution logic, and data pipelines where required.
  • Debug and resolve moderately complex issues spanning multiple layers of the stack, such as a frontend issue caused by backend state or asynchronous job execution.
  • Participate in triaging and resolving workflow execution issues.
  • Follow and reinforce existing coding standards, architectural patterns, and CI/CD practices.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers and developers across teams and departments to clarify requirements, asking the right questions rather than relying on fully specified requirements.
  • Push back or flag concerns when a requested approach conflicts with existing patterns, creates unnecessary complexity, or introduces technical risk.
  • Take ownership of your work and proactively communicate progress, blockers, risks, and technical decisions.

What they're looking for

  • 4+ years of experience in full-stack software development.
  • Solid proficiency across the full stack relevant to the platform, including Vue.js or a comparable frontend framework, TypeScript and Node.js for backend development, REST APIs, and relational and job-queue-backed data stores, including PostgreSQL and Redis.
  • Strong frontend development skills and an interest in building intuitive, reliable user interfaces for complex computational workflows.
  • Comfortable working with the challenges of computational and workflow systems, including asynchronous execution, state management for long-running jobs, databases, retries and idempotency, task dependencies, and graceful failure handling.
  • Experience working with Argo Workflows or a comparable workflow orchestration system is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to read and reason about a codebase beyond your immediate task, avoiding duplicated logic and unintended impacts on adjacent functionality.
  • Basic familiarity with deployment and infrastructure pipelines, including CI/CD, Docker, logging, and monitoring/OTEL, sufficient to ship and debug independently.
  • Degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, or equivalent industry experience.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of parallel processing techniques and experience with libraries such as mpi4py.
  • Familiarity with GPU acceleration using CUDA, OpenCL, JAX, or Numba.
  • Experience with quantum software development kits, simulators, or related research tooling.
  • Background in quantum algorithms, hybrid quantum-classical workflows, or scientific computing.

Summarised by NextRaise from the employer’s description, which follows in full below.

Full description from employer

At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.

Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.

The work

We are looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer (mid-level) to join the Vertical Deployment team and contribute to building the platform that makes exploring and using quantum computing for real-world problems as seamless as solving them any other way. The team builds tools that enable users to configure, execute, monitor, and understand computational workflows — from pipeline execution and job scheduling to data processing and results visualization.

While this is a full-stack engineering role, the work will be slightly more inclined towards frontend development. The role will work across the stack when needed, including the integration points between frontend and backend, and take ownership of engineering work from implementation through deployment.

The role involves close collaboration with researchers and engineers across IQM to turn complex computational requirements into reliable, intuitive, and production-quality software.

This role is to be based at IQM, in Munich, Berlin, or Espoo.

Why IQM?

  • Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.

  • High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.

  • Never the smartest: You won’t always be the smartest person in the room. Neither will we. Expect to learn constantly - from each other and beyond with IQM’s Learning Hub, LinkedIn Learning, and a team-based L&D budget.

  • Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!

  • The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.

  • Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.

The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.
