Job Description

We’re looking for a General Manager, Corporate Development to take the lead in the identification, evaluation, execution, and integration of the organisation's inorganic growth agenda, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, minority investments, and divestments.

This permanent Sydney-based opportunity plays a central part in shaping and stress-testing the organisation's broader corporate strategy, ensuring capital allocation decisions align with the mutual's long-term member value proposition, risk appetite, and strategic priorities.

Reporting to the CFO, this is a senior leadership position requiring the ability to operate at Board level, influence across a multi-divisional Group structure, and balance commercial ambition with the governance expectations distinctive to a large member-owned mutual.

What You’ll Do

Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Partner with the CEO and Group Executive team to develop and refresh the corporate growth strategy alongside group strategy, identifying priority sectors, capability gaps, and adjacencies for expansion.
  • Build and maintain a live pipeline of M&A, partnership, and investment opportunities aligned to strategic priorities.
  • Conduct market scanning, competitor analysis, and scenario planning to inform Board-level strategic narratives and long-range plans.
  • Lead origination, screening, and prioritisation of acquisition, investment, and partnership opportunities across the Group.
  • Direct end-to-end deal execution: valuation, financial modelling, due diligence coordination, negotiation strategy, and deal structuring.
  • Manage relationships with investment banks, advisors, legal counsel, and other external transaction partners.
  • Prepare and present investment papers, business cases, and recommendations to the Investment Committee, Group Executive, and Board.
  • Oversee integration planning and execution for completed transactions, working closely with divisional leaders to realise synergies and strategic value.
  • Establish tracking frameworks to measure post-completion performance against original investment theses.
  • Lead or support divestment processes where portfolio rationalisation is required.
  • Ensure all corporate development activity meets the governance, risk, and compliance standards especially inline with Group risk appetite
  • Continue to evolve the Member investment screener, ensuring rigorous, consistent evaluation of risk-adjusted returns and alignment with member value creation (not shareholder return maximisation).
  • Present clearly to non-executive Directors and Board Investment/Risk Committees, translating complex transaction detail into accessible strategic narratives.
  • Build, lead, and develop a small high-performing Corporate Development team.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO, CFO, and Group Executive and collaborate across Strategy, Finance, Legal Risk and divisional leadership to support strategic capital deployment and growth initiatives.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Economics, Law, or related field.  MBA or CFA highly regarded but not essential
  • 12+ years' experience in corporate development, M&A advisory (investment banking or Big 4 transaction services), private equity, or corporate strategy, including significant transaction leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience executing completed transactions from origination through to integration, ideally including both acquisitions and divestments
  • Prior exposure to mutual, member-owned, cooperative, or not-for-profit organisational structures highly regarded, given the distinct governance and stakeholder dynamics versus listed companies
  • Proven strategic ability who can also roll up sleeves on deal mechanics and negotiation
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen including valuation, financial modelling, capital allocation frameworks
  • Sophisticated stakeholder management and Board-level communication skills
  • Ability to balance rigorous commercial evaluation with the values-based, long-term member-focused decision-making culture of a mutual
