Head of Industry

Our client is seeking a Head of Industry to lead operational and industrial delivery within the defence and security sector. Based in Templecombe, this permanent leadership role will oversee manufacturing, supply chain, industrial engineering and continuous improvement activities across a complex, high-mix, low-volume environment. The successful applicant will manage a multi-disciplinary team and help shape the long-term industrial strategy while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction, quality, delivery and cost.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead end-to-end industrial operations, including industrialisation, planning, procurement, manufacturing, integration, testing, repair, logistics and delivery.
• Develop and deploy industrial and supply chain strategies aligned with operational and strategic business objectives.
• Manage complex manufacturing and supply chain activities, ensuring products are delivered to the required quality, time and cost standards.
• Oversee industrial engineering for new products from design through to production, ensuring reliable and competitive manufacturing solutions.
• Lead continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, change management and the introduction of Industry 4.0 and digital industrial technologies.
• Ensure effective use of ERP, MRP, MES, QMS and other industrial toolsets to support efficient and controlled processes.
• Manage the industrial operating budget, monitor performance against targets and represent industrial operations at bid and gate reviews.
• Promote a strong culture of collaboration, innovation, health and safety, environmental responsibility and operational excellence.

Job Requirements:

• Significant experience in senior operational leadership within a complex manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams across manufacturing, supply chain, engineering, procurement, logistics and continuous improvement.
• Strong understanding of total supply chain disciplines, including industrial process engineering, planning, supplier quality assurance and delivery.
• Proven knowledge of lean manufacturing techniques, including 5S, Kaizen, levelled pull flow, heijunka, visual control and continuous improvement.
• Understanding of Industry 4.0, digital manufacturing and the strategic application of new industrial technologies.
• Experience using MRP, ERP, MES and other industrial systems to improve operational performance.
• Strong change management, stakeholder engagement, communication and team development skills, with the confidence to make informed decisions.
• Degree-level qualification in engineering, manufacturing or a related discipline, with relevant lean manufacturing expertise.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications:

• Experience across the full product lifecycle, from bid and design through to production, delivery and service.
• Background in defence manufacturing or a similarly regulated, high-technology industrial environment.
• Experience implementing Industry 4.0 initiatives or developing digital manufacturing strategies.
• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, APICS, MBA or DMS qualification.

Additional Information:

• Somerset-based role with occasional travel of approximately 5-10%.
• Responsibility for leading a team of approximately 7-10 direct reports.
