IT Manager, Application Development

TerraPower is seeking an IT Manager to lead a team responsible for maintaining and optimizing our enterprise application portfolio, primarily commercial off-the-shelf software on Windows infrastructure with some Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This hands-on leadership role bridges technology and business, ensuring applications effectively support engineering, operations, finance, supply chain, and corporate functions. Responsibilities include implementation, integration, upgrade and patch management, vendor relations, performance, and aligning solutions to business needs.

The IT Manager will oversee up to eight systems engineers and analysts. Systems engineers focus on technical health; installation, configuration, upgrades, automation, and troubleshooting, while systems analysts translate business requirements, drive adoption, resolve functional issues, and serve as the bridge between users and technology.

Job Role Responsibility

Lead the team

• Manage, coach, and develop a team of up to eight systems engineers and systems analysts. Set clear expectations, give useful feedback often, and remove obstacles.
• Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for your team. Build a bench, not just a headcount.
• Balance workload across competing departmental priorities, project commitments, and production support demands, and provide stakeholders updates on delivery.
• Create the conditions for people to do good work: clear ownership, reasonable on-call rotations, documented runbooks, and enough slack in the schedule to think.

Own the application portfolio

• Serve as the operational owner for a portfolio of COTS applications: availability, performance, patching, upgrades, licensing posture, and lifecycle planning.
• Maintain an application portfolio with the data elements required to manage their lifecycle for the enterprise.
• Plan and execute application upgrades and migrations with attention to testing, rollback, change control, and user communication.
• Partner with Architecture, Infrastructure, Information Security, and Data Management peers on server platforms, identity and access, backup and recovery, monitoring, and data integration.

Deliver projects

• Lead application implementations and enhancements from requirements through deployment and stabilization, working with internal stakeholders, implementation partners, and vendors.
• Manage software vendors and integrators: hold them to scope and schedule, escalate effectively, and know the contract.

Support the business.

• Build real working relationships with department leaders. Understand their processes well enough to tell the difference between what they asked for and what they need.
• Establish sensible service levels, intake processes, and prioritization mechanisms that reduce friction encouraging people to actually use them.
• Champion adoption, training, and documentation so that the value we paid for actually gets realized.

Operate in a regulated environment.

• Ensure application changes follow established change management, documentation, and quality requirements.
• Support compliance obligations related to records management, export-controlled information, cyber security controls, and audit readiness, in partnership with Information Security, Internal Audit, Legal and Quality.

 

What we're looking for

Required

• Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 3–8 years of experience managing technology resources including FTEs and contractors, with direct accountability for their work and development.
• Demonstrated experience supporting or implementing commercial off-the-shelf enterprise applications.
• Strong working knowledge of Windows Server environments and the supporting ecosystem: Active Directory, IIS, SQL Server, Windows patching and change control.
• Working familiarity with Linux administration concepts, ideally RHEL, sufficient to lead a team supporting Linux-hosted applications.
• Solid grasp of application support fundamentals: incident and change management, environment strategy (dev/test/prod), release testing, integrations, and authentication.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred

• Experience in a regulated or engineering-driven industry (e.g. nuclear, aerospace, energy, defense, life sciences, etc.).
• Experience with EDMS, EAM, PLM, or engineering application portfolios.
• Familiarity with ITIL-aligned service management practices and tooling.
• Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, Python) and infrastructure-as-code concepts.
• Exposure to cloud and hybrid hosting models, particularly Azure or government cloud environments.
• Experience managing software vendors, license agreements, and statements of work.
• Experience introducing AI-assisted tooling into enterprise application support or business workflows.

Salary Range: $153,861-$205,149

 

*Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual’s qualifications experience.  This range is specific to Washington State.
