Legislative and Regulatory Research Intern

Position Summary:

The firm is seeking a motivated college student, grad student or recent graduate for a paid internship supporting our Legislative Research Attorney.  This role is ideal for a student considering law librarianship, law school or a career as a paralegal, offering direct, hands-on exposure to how attorneys and legislative professionals track, analyze, and organize legal and regulatory developments to service clients.  The intern will work closely with the Legislative Research Attorney and other staff and will gain practical experience with government publications, legal databases, AI tools, and document management systems used in a law firm practice.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Daily Federal Register and Congressional Record monitoring. Review and flag items relevant to the firm's clients and practice areas. Careful, daily reading provides hands on learning about the legislative and regulatory processes and allows for connections to be made beyond simple keyword alerts.
• Legislative and Regulatory transcript summaries. Using the latest legal AI tools, prepare and validate clear, concise summaries of bills, rules and congressional and agency hearing transcripts for use by attorneys and clients. Learn how to read and understand legislative and regulatory texts. 
• Bill tagging in BGOV and StateNet. Accurately tag and categorize federal and state legislation within BGOV and StateNet tracking platforms. This work is detail-intensive but essential to keeping the firm's legislative tracking systems reliable.
• Legislative history (LH) folder construction in iManage. Assist with an ongoing project to build and organize legislative history folders in iManage, ensuring research materials and legislative histories are properly filed, searchable, and easily accessible to attorneys.
• Online legislative history pages. Help maintain and build out intranet pages to host legislative histories for significant bills. Create and update links back to the underlying materials in iManage.
• News and publication monitoring. Monitor business and legal news publications for developments relevant to the firm's clients and practice areas. Support the Legislative Research Attorney’s work in circulating relevant items to each team.
• Legal database research. Conduct research using legal and legislative databases to support ongoing monitoring projects.

Education / Experience:

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree or graduate degree program; students considering law librarianship, law school or a paralegal career are especially encouraged to apply.
• Interest in government, public policy, or law is a plus.

Skills & Abilities:

• Strong reading comprehension and attention to detail. Prior exposure to complex legislative and regulatory texts is a plus.
• Excellent written communication skills, particularly the ability to summarize material clearly and concisely.
• Highly organized, reliable, and comfortable with repetitive, detail-oriented tasks that require sustained accuracy.
• Research capability, though no prior experience with BGOV, StateNet, or iManage is required; training will be provided.
