About this role

Position Summary:

The postholder will be a key member of the ultrasound team at Medica. Providing a specialist, high-quality ultrasound service to patients referred for obstetrics, gynaecology, and fertility imaging. Working in consultant-led private clinics with a reputation for excellence, the sonographer will perform, and report scans independently, communicate findings clearly to both patients and referring clinicians, and contribute to a high standard of patient-centred care.

Key responsibilities:

Clinical

  • Support, high-quality ultrasound services in obstetrics, gynaecology, and fertility practice, as agreed with the Head of Obstetrics and Midwife Manager.

  • Proficiency and experience in performing and reporting assessments for early pregnancy demise, measuring nuchal translucency, and performing mid-trimester detailed fetal anomaly scans, twin pregnancy assessments, and the identification and correct follow-up of fetal soft markers. Thorough understanding of placental abnormalities, fetal growth assessment, and amniotic fluid disorders

  • Ability to recognise the ultrasound characteristics of normal and abnormal fetal and female pelvic anatomy, pathology, and physiological variations.

  • Ensure safe practice and optimal imaging technique, during early pregnancy, fertility, and intimate procedures.

  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding the purpose and nature of the examination, gaining informed consent and offering chaperones in line with local protocol.

  • Identify urgent or unexpected findings and escalate these promptly to relevant clinicians in accordance with local protocols.

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained, cleaned, and used in compliance with infection prevention protocols.

  • Demonstrate sensitivity and professionalism when managing patients in emotional, stressful, or difficult situations.

  • Participate in quality assurance audits, peer reviews, and ongoing evaluation of clinical practice in line with accreditation requirements and HSE guidance.

General Responsibilities 

  • Comply with all national regulations, local policies, and accredited quality systems, including data protection, infection control, and patient confidentiality.

  • Accurately document and report ultrasound findings, ensuring clarity, timeliness, and alignment with clinical pathways.

  • Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings, multidisciplinary case reviews, and internal training sessions.

  • Support the induction, training, and mentorship of new or junior sonographers, students, and visiting staff, ensuring high clinical standards.

  • Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and professional work environment in accordance with Irish Health and Safety legislation.

  • Maintain proficiency in the use of ultrasound equipment and reporting systems; identify and report equipment faults in line with local procedures.

  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), actively pursuing learning opportunities relevant to obstetrics, gynaecology, and fertility imaging.

  • Support the training and development of new colleagues, student sonographers, or trainees as required, providing guidance, supervision, and practical learning opportunities to ensure high standards of clinical practice are maintained.
