About this opportunity:

The development of 5G-Advanced and future 6G wireless systems introduces increasingly demanding requirements on the performance, flexibility, and efficiency of Radio Units (RUs). Artificial intelligence and machine learning offer new opportunities to enhance signal processing and receiver functions within the RU.
This thesis will investigate the use of AI/ML techniques in radio-receiver and signal-processing functions for 5G/6G systems, with particular emphasis on their potential for practical RU applications.
The specific research problem, AI approach, and system scenario will be defined together with the student. The thesis therefore provides flexibility to explore an AI direction that matches the student’s interests while maintaining a clear focus on practical AI-assisted signal processing for 5G/6G Radio Units.

What you will do:

Select one or two related research directions from the items listed below, depending on your interests and background:
•    AI-assisted MIMO receivers and signal detection
•    AI-based channel estimation and equalization
•    AI-assisted signal processing under challenging wireless conditions
•    AI-based compensation of RF and hardware impairments
•    AI-assisted processing for massive MIMO systems
•    Learning-based or model-based signal-processing techniques
•    AI methods designed with practical RU implementation constraints in mind

Identify a suitable RU-side problem, select an appropriate AI/ML approach, and evaluate its performance
against conventional signal-processing techniques. Consider practical RU implementation aspects such as computational complexity, latency, memory requirements, energy efficiency, and hardware
feasibility. Conduct the work through simulation and, where appropriate, evaluate the solution on a
suitable hardware or computing platform.

Conclude the thesis with a written report and a presentation of the results.

The skills you bring:

•    Master’s-level studies in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, applied physics, or a related field
•    Background in wireless communications, digital signal processing, or radio systems
•    Interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning for signal-processing applications
•    Programming experience, preferably in Python, C++, or a similar language
•    Ability to work independently, analyze technical problems, and communicate results clearly
•    Knowledge of MIMO, channel estimation, detection, equalization, RF impairments, or hardware-aware AI is beneficial but not required
