If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We’re currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Material Controls Lead.

This role sits within Finance in the Group Chief Control Oversight Office (GCCOO), an oversight structure being set up to simplify and improve the effectiveness of controls through a centralised approach. As Material Controls Lead, you’ll be accountable for end-to-end ownership of the Group’s Material Controls (MC) population and Material Control Instances (MCIs). You’ll provide strategic oversight, governance and execution across the annual Material Controls cycle to ensure MCs and MCIs are complete, accurate, evidenced and defensible. You’ll also monitor the Material Controls and issues landscape to identify and escalate material weaknesses and potential disclosable items and support remediation. Success means globally consistent standards, clear governance and an audit trail that stands up to internal and regulatory expectations.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you will:

  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of the Group’s Material Controls population and associated Material Control Instances (MCIs) including data quality, completeness and currency
  • Establish and run governance that confirms clear ownership, rationale and linkages for each MC and MCI including risks, processes and issues
  • Set expectations for audit trail and evidence packs for MC and MCI decisions, changes, exceptions and outcomes in line with internal and regulatory standards
  • Define and oversee change controls for MC and MCI additions, removals, reclassification and materiality decisions including rationale and stakeholder sign-off where required
  • Monitor issues and Material Controls to identify indicators of material weaknesses and potential disclosable items and escalate through agreed governance pathways
  • Partner with 1LOD, 2LOD and relevant SMEs to validate severity, understand root-cause themes and ensure remediation plans are robust, owned and tracked
  • Influence stakeholders to strengthen control outcomes and reduce the likelihood of re-occurrence
  • Manage cross-functional initiatives impacting control guidance such as framework changes, tooling or process enhancements and reporting improvements

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Bring substantial experience in controls oversight, control governance and or enterprise risk management within a complex global financial services environment
  • Apply a strong understanding of the risk and control landscape including regulatory expectations and how control weaknesses can translate into disclosures and reputational impact
  • Demonstrate proven experience owning and assuring control populations or inventories or equivalent governance datasets with strong data quality and auditability standards
  • Manage senior stakeholders across 1LOD, 2LOD and oversight functions and influence outcomes through constructive challenge
  • Deliver across multiple workstreams with clear milestones, quality gates and measurable outcomes
