  • Providing emotional support, education and advocacy to patients and families to ensure the patient's health and safety needs are met.
  • Participating as a professional team member in planning for a safe discharge.
  • Collaborating with referring providers, medical social workers, Dayton Children's medical teams, and community agency personnel including Children Services and Law Enforcement agencies.
  • Assisting in departmental onboarding, training, coaching and job shadowing, participating in the Department's peer mentoring program for new staff and providing mentoring to staff around developing medical social work skills in child abuse and neglect.
  • Participating in the social work coverage plan and the holiday rotation coverage plan.

Job Details:

The Social Worker for the Child Advocacy (CA) Department is responsible for serving patients in the emergency department, inpatient units, and the Child Advocacy Clinics when there is a concern for suspected child physical or sexual abuse or child neglect. As an integral part of the Child Advocacy team, the social worker assists families through assessment, collaboration, coordination, mandated referrals, education, community resource linkage and advocacy. Through psychosocial and intervention strategies, this social worker assists patients and families with issues related to resource needs, treatment and prevention. Social worker is responsible for the delivery of social work services which are available to the patient, the patient’s family, and other persons significant to the patient. This position provides psychosocial assessment of the patient and family, including child abuse and neglect risk factors, protective factors, resources, safety, and other needs and barriers. Social worker identifies, coordinates, and utilizes community resources to provide support to families and patients in crisis or experiencing trauma, and provides education and resources to optimize coping, functioning and prevention. Social worker provides emotional support, education and advocacy to patients and families to ensure the patient’s health and safety needs are met.

Participates as a professional team member in planning for a safe discharge. Collaborates with referring providers, medical social workers, Dayton Children’s medical teams, and community agency personnel including Children Services and Law Enforcement agencies. Social worker demonstrates the ability to work independently while supporting a strong team approach to helping patients and families.
