The Medical Lab Technician II-NR is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Lab Technician II-NR will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

We are seeking a dedicated Medical Technologist II to join our laboratory team on a full-time evening and weekend schedule. This role is an integral part of the patient care team, supporting diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring through the accurate and timely performance of laboratory testing. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a commitment to quality, customer service, and regulatory compliance while contributing to a world-class laboratory environment.

Position Summary

The Medical Technologist II is responsible for performing, evaluating, and reporting laboratory tests with accuracy, precision, and timeliness. This position ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards while supporting quality patient care. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and exceptional customer service in all interactions.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Education

✅ Must be enrolled in the final year of a Clinical Laboratory Science Associate Degree Program.

Licensure

✅ Must obtain required certification within one (1) year of hire.

Required Skills & Qualifications

✅ Ability to perform laboratory testing and accurately report results according to established policies and procedures.

✅ Knowledge of quality control, calibration, instrument maintenance, and laboratory safety standards.

✅ Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for resolving testing issues and unexpected results.

✅ Ability to prioritize workload, manage time effectively, and consistently meet turnaround time expectations.

✅ Strong verbal and written communication skills.

✅ Ability to utilize laboratory and hospital information systems (LIS, HIS, laboratory software, internet-based systems, etc.).

✅ Ability to follow regulatory, accreditation, and departmental guidelines while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

✅ Commitment to customer service excellence and teamwork.

Preferred Experience

⭐ Previous experience in a medical or healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

• Perform the full range of laboratory testing and reporting procedures.
• Accurately perform and document quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance activities.
• Troubleshoot testing issues, document findings, and communicate concerns appropriately.
• Maintain current knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
• Ensure all testing meets established quality and regulatory standards.

Specimen Collection & Processing

• Collect, label, transfer, and process laboratory specimens according to established procedures.
• Ensure specimen integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate specimen referrals and transfers when necessary.

Quality Assurance

• Review and evaluate quality control results.
• Investigate and implement corrective actions when necessary.
• Review, correlate, and validate test results before release.
• Communicate critical results according to departmental policies.
• Participate in proficiency testing and process improvement initiatives.
• Maintain competency documentation and regulatory compliance.

Teamwork & Customer Service

• Collaborate with laboratory staff, healthcare providers, vendors, and patients.
• Participate in training and educational activities as requested.
• Attend required departmental, laboratory, and hospital meetings.
• Assist with inventory management and supply monitoring.
• Support staffing needs and departmental objectives.

Financial & Operational Stewardship

• Demonstrate responsible use of laboratory resources and supplies.
• Manage workload efficiently to meet productivity standards.
• Contribute to operational effectiveness and continuous improvement efforts.

Continuing Education Requirements

✅ Complete a minimum of 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually.

Acceptable CEU activities include:

• Webinars
• Online courses
• Conferences
• Educational classes
• Other approved professional development opportunities related to laboratory science

✅ Complete all mandatory hospital and laboratory education requirements by established deadlines.
