Mission Critical Facility Design Manager

Would you run data centre design from southern Spain if the projects were good enough?

It is a fair question to ask of any role that involves moving, so here is the honest answer. The projects are data centres across Europe, Africa and Asia, the office is one of our client's design hubs rather than a satellite, and the design manager there is the person clients deal with directly rather than a coordinator passing drawings along.

Our client is an international engineering and design consultancy with a Mission Critical Facilities team serving data centre operators, colocation providers and telecoms companies. This role owns the design scope, the design budget and the programme on live projects, pulls the mechanical, electrical and structural work into one coherent design, and presents it to the client. When the design changes, and it always does, you decide what that means for cost and programme and you take that conversation to the client yourself.

There is a build element too. Our client wants the person in this role to improve how the team works and to capture what it learns, so the job is partly about leaving the function better than you found it.

Responsibilities

• Ownership of project scope, design budget and contractual documentation
• Design programme planning and workload distribution across the team
• Coordination with multidisciplinary partners and external stakeholders
• Design reviews, and control of design changes through to sign-off
• Presenting design concepts to clients and internal teams
• Improving team processes and retaining knowledge

Requirements

• Master's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering
• Around five years managing multidisciplinary design, engineering and construction projects, data centre experience preferred
• Confident with BIM 360 and common data environments
• Familiarity with industry standards and with how operators actually run their facilities
• Fluent English

Spanish, Dutch or German all help, as does experience of automated design workflows, but the client is not screening on any of them.

Package

Up to €95,000 base salary depending on experience and level, with performance bonuses on top. Twenty-three holiday days, a modern office in the Málaga area, laptop and phone, travel allowance, and a structured training and knowledge sharing programme.
