What you'll do
- Codes inpatient and outpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection
- Assigns ICD-10-CM codes for diagnoses and procedures for inpatients and outpatients
- Applies CPT-4 procedure codes to all outpatients treated within the OSU Health System
- Abstracts medical record data into a clinical abstracting system
- Codes inpatient, outpatient clinic, and ancillary area records
- Responsible for coding and billing of medical records and other documents for patient visits
- Selects appropriate diagnosis, principal and secondary diagnoses, and sequences diagnoses and procedures
- Enters data into a computer system in accordance with productivity standards set for the department

- Demonstrated coding proficiency through satisfactory completion of OSUWMC’s coding test.
- Familiarity or experience with computer assisted coding and/or automated encoder.
- Required for hospital coding : Credentialed as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by the American Health Information Management Association; or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), formerly CPC-H, by AAPC; or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder by AMAC (note: applicable if only coding Radiation Oncology accounts).

This area codes inpatient and outpatient medical records to facilitate the reimbursement and data collection for the individual business units of the OSU Health System. ICD-10-CM codes are assigned for the diagnoses and procedures for all inpatients treated within the OSU Health System. ICD-10-CM diagnoses codes and CPT-4 procedure codes are applied to all outpatients treated within the OSU Health System. Medical record data is then abstracted into a clinical abstracting system. This position is responsible for coding some or all the following types of records: inpatient, outpatient clinic, and ancillary areas.
Position Summary
The position is primarily responsible for coding/billing of medical records and other documents for the patient’s visits. This requires selection of appropriate diagnosis, principal and secondary diagnoses, deciphering handwriting of professional staff, and sequencing diagnoses and procedures abstracted from medical records. Data is then entered into a computer system. This staff member is responsible for complete and accurate coding for hospital reimbursement, research, and planning, in accordance with productivity standards set for the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum completion of a CAHIIM approved coding certificate program or HIMT program or equivalent education & experience
