The department
The Communications, Advancement and Stakeholder Engagement section is led by Liam Preston (Director of Communications, Advancement and Stakeholder Engagement).
The core focus of the section is to connect the University of Essex with the communities we serve — locally, nationally, and globally. Duties of the role
The role of Outreach Mentor offers the opportunity for personal development, while gaining a range of transferable skills. It is an ideal role for students who are interested in working with young people in the future, particularly those who are interested in teaching, social work or counselling roles
The role focuses on being a positive role model for small groups of 13–14-year-olds in-school, over a number of weekly sessions. The postholder will collaborate with fellow Outreach Mentors, the Outreach Team and local school teachers to provide insights, encouragement and aspirational goalsetting activities for their secondary school student mentees.
Additional opportunities to support wider Outreach activities are available. This includes working as part of a team to deliver a positive and impactful campus visit experiences, showing secondary school aged students what life is like on campus at the University of Essex. Helping them to feel like it is a place they can belong and should feel comfortable in aspiring to reach.

Successful candidates will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.
To satisfy the enhanced referencing, applicants will need to provide the names of two referees who can cover a 3-year employment/ Education history. If an applicant has not been in employment or education for any period over 1 month in the past 3 years, details of a person who is not a member of immediate family or a close personal friend who will be able to confirm the applicant’s suitability for the role.
